LOOKING BACK

The Tri-County Country Club goes back many years as a gathering place for local golfers and has served as a venue for several social events as well.

When prospective industries looked to our area, we were always proud to point to the club as an incentive for new industry to consider a move to our community.

PRE-GAME HUDDLE

After losing to No. 1 ranked Boyle County, Corbin Coach Steve Jewell must get his team focused for the North Laurel Jaguars Friday night at NLHS.

“I’m sure the Jungle will be rocking,” said Jewell. “They are 2-1, they had a really good year last season and they are confident.”

PIGSKIN DEFEAT

According to Corbin football Coach Steve Jewell the effort was there Saturday night when the Redhounds faced the #1 team in Class 4A, the Boyle County Rebels. Corbin couldn’t stop the defending state champions from winning their 18th straight game with a 42-10 win over the Redhounds.

DRAGON SLAYERS

Williamsburg, known for its passing attack, turned the tables on the Harlan Green Dragons Friday night rushing the football for 220 yards in a 32-14 win.

While rolling up 388 yards of total offense the Yellow Jackets held the traditional hard-running Dragons to just 47 yards on the ground

STATE CHAMPS VISIT CORBIN

The 16th Annual Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic maybe the toughest yet for the Corbin Redhounds. Corbin (1-0) will be a heavy underdog when they take on the Boyle County Rebels, the defending 4A state champions and the current #1 team in the state.

REDHOUNDS HAMMER DRAGONS

The Corbin Redhounds opened the 2010 football season in fine fashion Friday night with a resounding 52-14 win over the Harlan Green Dragons. Senior running back Matthew Taylor ran the ball seven times from the line of scrimmage with three of those going for touchdowns. He also scored on a 62-yard punt return and a 53 yard pass from Roman Mitchell to account for 30 of the 52 points the Redhounds put on the scoreboard.

COLONELS ROLL

The Whitley County Colonels picked up a non-district win over the Lynn Camp Wildcats Friday night at Colonels Stadium, 62-13.

The Colonels (1-1) scored often in the first half building a 48-0 lead with :57 left in the second quarter.

BOWL LOSS

Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron knew it was going to be a tough task taking a “W” from the North Laurel Jaguars Saturday night. And with three turnovers in their first three possessions, it turned into a long night for the Yellow Jackets, who lost the game 41-20.

Don’t let the score fool you; the Jaguars had a tough time putting the Yellow Jackets away. “Those three turnovers really hurt us,” Herron said.

Corn Hole Tournament

New year, new champions. The second News Journal Corn Hole Tournament was another success. News Editor Trent Knuckles and I watched 21 teams battle for the $500 cash prizes, $350 for first and $150 for second.

WHITLEY CO. WINS

The Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team opened their season on a winning note Thursday night in Lawson Gym. Whitley County won over Harlan County, 25-17, 25-19.
