Angelina Jolie’s revelation that she had a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer greatly raises public awareness of the genetic testing she used, which indicates an elevated risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Her doctor estimated that she had an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer. She also plans to have her ovaries removed since her mother died of ovarian cancer.

In the past four, five, six weeks from listening to chaotic news from bombings, heinous murders, abductions and serious fighting in the mid-east, my mind is approaching meltdown. And I ask myself, what is to follow? Will we succumb to more horrific happenings and become immune to these horrible events. A latch on a screen door was considered adequate to keep burglars out in those days. But burglars were a nonentity in my neighborhood. I don’t recall a single burglary.
