The 16th Annual Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic maybe the toughest yet for the Corbin Redhounds. Corbin (1-0) will be a heavy underdog when they take on the Boyle County Rebels, the defending 4A state champions and the current #1 team in the state.

The Corbin Redhounds opened the 2010 football season in fine fashion Friday night with a resounding 52-14 win over the Harlan Green Dragons. Senior running back Matthew Taylor ran the ball seven times from the line of scrimmage with three of those going for touchdowns. He also scored on a 62-yard punt return and a 53 yard pass from Roman Mitchell to account for 30 of the 52 points the Redhounds put on the scoreboard.

The Whitley County Colonels picked up a non-district win over the Lynn Camp Wildcats Friday night at Colonels Stadium, 62-13.
The Colonels (1-1) scored often in the first half building a 48-0 lead with :57 left in the second quarter.

Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron knew it was going to be a tough task taking a “W” from the North Laurel Jaguars Saturday night. And with three turnovers in their first three possessions, it turned into a long night for the Yellow Jackets, who lost the game 41-20.
Don’t let the score fool you; the Jaguars had a tough time putting the Yellow Jackets away. “Those three turnovers really hurt us,” Herron said.

New year, new champions. The second News Journal Corn Hole Tournament was another success. News Editor Trent Knuckles and I watched 21 teams battle for the $500 cash prizes, $350 for first and $150 for second.

The Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team opened their season on a winning note Thursday night in Lawson Gym. Whitley County won over Harlan County, 25-17, 25-19.
A BIG WIN

The Corbin volleyball team pulled off a big win Monday night when they downed the North Laurel Lady Jaguars, 25-21, 25-19 at the Corbin Primary School.
“It was a big district win,” said an elated Alecia Elwell. “I am hoping we improve every game. I still haven’t found that one lineup that has everyone working together. We still have gaps and holes. It’s just not there yet.”

The Whitley County Colonels played their first-ever soccer game at their new stadium off highway 25. The Colonels played the Pulaski County Maroons in the opener.

Whitley County has decided to begin varsity soccer this season. The Colonels introduced the sport last year and played a junior varsity schedule under the direction of Bosko Cupac, a former player for the University of the Cumberlands.
The Colonels had so much enthusiasm and success Cupac says the numbers are up and Whitley County will field a varsity and junior varsity with a 16-game schedule. Whitley County will be in District 31 with Corbin, Middlesboro, North Laurel, Oneida Baptist and South Laurel.

It is billed the Battle of the Undefeated and to the winner goes the WBC Cruiserweight crown. It will be Williamsburg’s Warren Browning (12-0-1, 8 KOs) going against Ryan Coyne (14-0, 4 KOs) Saturday (August 7) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. It’s the third fight on Don King’s fight card and televised on HBO’s Fighting After Dark.
