James Thomas Bernardo James Thomas Bernardo, age 83, of Corbin, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at the Heritage. He was born in Gary, W. Va. to the late Angelo and Jane Walker Bernardo. James was a United States Marine Corp veteran of World War having participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima, Siapan, and Tinian. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a BA in 1949. James worked for U.S. Steel for 27 years before becoming a Safety Specialist with the Mine Safety and Health Administration before retiring. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Loflin and Eukie Court. James is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wilma Bernardo, whom he married on Oct. 17, 1953; three sons, James Thomas Bernardo Jr. of Cumberland, Ky., John Angelo Bernardo and wife Alesia of Corbin and Robert Walker Bernardo and wife Anita of Hebron, Ky.; five grandchildren, Brian, Alex, Ross, Tony and Katie Bernardo and several nieces and nephews. Funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery in Jellico, Tenn. with military honors by VFW Post #1410 of Corbin. He was born Sept. 17, 1928 at Hagan, Va. to the late Dwight Moody Smith and Mabel Chance Smith, and predeceased by two brothers, Blair Smith and Dwight Smith, and a sister, Beulah Helton. He had been an active member of Southern Hills UM Church at Lexington and First United Methodist Church at Corbin. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Korea War. He was blessed with his wife of 54 years, Mary Smith; two daughters, Penny Williamson of Corbin and Suzanne Lawson of Lexington; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, along with a host of family and friends. Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 26 at the O’Neil Funeral Home. The funeral followed at 7 p.m. with Rev. Jim Stratton and Rev. Tim Thompson officiating. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Dale Walker, Gary Johnson, Fred Roark, Bob Byrd, Roy Allison and Nick Cobb. Herman Claude Angel Herman Claude Angel, age 74, of Croley Bend Road, Williamsburg, passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 at his home. He was the husband of Amanda Angel. He is also survived by his daughter, Samantha and husband Bobby Newsome of Williamsburg; an adopted daughter, Kelly Young and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Delmer Lawson Delmer Lawson, age 82, of Maiden Bend Road, Williamsburg, husband of the late Lorene Lawson, passed away Monday, Aug. 18 at the Jellico Community Hospital. Sharon Sulfridge Sharon Sulfridge of Youngs Chapel Road Corbin, Ky. passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 24, 2008 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Ky. She was born on Aug. 16, 1951 in Whitley County, Ky. She was 57 years and eight days of age. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Church of God in Williamsburg, Ky. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Sulfridge; a sister, Sylvia Hinkle; a brother, Charles “Chuck” Sulfridge and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Sulfridge. She is survived by her mother, Sara Estella Marsee Sulfridge of Corbin, Ky.; two sisters, Carol Brower and her husband Gordan of Lily, Ky. and Hope Manning of Corbin, Ky.; five brothers, David Sulfridge and his wife Elaine, Dale Sulfridge, Phillip Sulfridge, Joel Lynn Sulfridge and Gary Sulfridge and his wife Carol, all of Williamsburg, Ky. and several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. She was born Feb. 16, 1930 in Knox County, Ky. to the late Sherman Fletcher and Mathy Brewer Fletcher. She was 78 years, six months and five days of age. She was also preceded in death by sons, Willie Bunch, Paul Bunch and children at birth, Earl Bunch and Charles Bunch and Gwana Bunch. She was a member of the Cumberland Heights Church of God. He is preceded in death by one son, David Wayne Ivey; two brothers, Robert and George Ivey; three infant siblings and two grandsons, Canaan and Caleb Morgan.
