Grayson makes late Primary push through Whitley County

Secretary of State Trey Grayson made two stops in Whitley County Friday as part of his 38-stop “Kentucky First” tour that had a heavy focus on southeastern Kentucky – a part of the state he is relying on for support in Tuesdays Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

During short stump speeches in both Williamsburg, and then Corbin, Grayson pointed out stark differences between he and his chief rival in the election, Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul. Perhaps the biggest divide, one that hits home with many eastern Kentuckians, is over the issue of coal use as an energy source.

“Coal is a big deal for me … My opponent says coal is dirty. We just disagree,” Grayson told the crowd of about 75 in front of Corbin City Hall.

Grayson said, if elected, he wants to serve on the Energy Committee so that he can ask the Environmental Protection Agency “tough questions” about policies he says are detrimental to the coal industry and would stifle attempts at job growth in the state.

In his introduction, Corbin City Manager Bill Ed Cannon said he supports Grayson precisely because of his position on coal.

“Coal, to Kentucky and eastern Kentucky, is its livelihood,” Cannon said.

Grayson touched on other issues as well. He said his main task, if elected, would be to put the brakes on “out of control spending” and “job-killing policies” in Washington, D.C. put in place in the last two years.

“I think like a lot of you we are concerned about the Obama administration and the folks in control in Washington right now who are pulling this country to the left, in the wrong direction … I want to go to Washington to stop that.”

Grayson said he is the only true fiscal conservative in the race, pointing to the fact that he’s cut spending 15 percent during his seven year stint as Secretary of State.

He also said he has implemented “common sense” conservative reforms like improving the voter registration system, cutting red tape for businesses and put all the expenditures for his office online for taxpayers to see.”

“We didn’t need a law to tell us to do the right thing. We just went ahead and did it.”

Fighting an uphill battle in the polls, some of which show him anywhere from 13 to 16 percentage points behind Paul with voters, Grayson said he’s counting heavily on the Fifth Congressional District to carry him through to Election Day.

Mr. Grayson's response to a question about outsourcing IT Work. It went something like this, (this is not word for word) but you can get the basis of it. ****Go Back to School, we are going to try to lower tuition*** What a JOKE!

Voter (May 17, 2010)

I met Mr. Grayson in Williamsburg Friday for the first time and he has my vote. Both him and Rand Paul seem like nice men but Grayson is so much more genuine. You can tell Paul knows very little about this area or Kentucky for that matter.

Voter (May 17, 2010)

Anyone who has touch a lump of coal knows that its about the dirtiest thing there is, If Grayson doesn't know that he's never touched a lump of coal or is a liar. Rand is all for coal because it's a matter of personal property rights, you can do what you want with your own property, it's no one else's buisness if you are not harming someone else's property plain and simple. Rand is all for coal and keeping the epa from ruining what few good jobs it makes here in east KY. This bias paper is doing a serious diservice to the community by not covering rand and his REAL VIEWS (randpaul2010.com) since the owner is donner to Grayson and that is his horse in the race. Clearly all you care about is money not what is good for the country, Kentucky, or the republican party. No offense to Mr. Nuckles this is well written, it's just not fair.

Rand Paul is going to win. . . . Nice of trey to finally show up down here.

meadbow (May 17, 2010)

I hope Rand wins myself. I wish someone would really fight against the extremist left and save what is left of this country. We need someone who is going to actually create opportunities so businesses can actually afford to grow and hire people and it would also be nice if someone would actually focus on this part of Kentucky when it comes to jobs and pay. It is sad the best paying jobs in this area are around $10.00 an hour when everywhere else doing the same work would pay $18 or more. I think Rand is actually for the people.

meadbowled (May 17, 2010)

meadbow, you are so naive. Paul is not a kentuckian...he could care less about this area....your vote will send a democrat to d.c.

truth (May 18, 2010)

Paul just picked Kentucky because he knew it was the most likely place he could win. He is not a Kentuckian and anyone with any sense knows that.

neadbow (May 18, 2010)

why does it matter whether he is a Kentuckian or not? What matters is that he will or could really do something different than the rest of these political people who are nothing but talk. I am definately not an Obama fan. What I am is for following the Constitution and not becoming a Socialist country so anyone whether he is Kentuckian as long as he is American willing to fight for people's rights -I am all for it.

meadbow (May 18, 2010)

also Rand has lived in Kentucky for 18 years and is not a Democrat

meadedbowled (May 18, 2010)

Dummy, if Paul wins the democrat will beat him. And it is important that our representative represent us..Kentuckians and you wouldn't know a socialist if you bumped into one, like a fireman, policeman, post office employee and the list goes on

meadbow (May 18, 2010)

Meadedbowled, it is very hard to take you seriously when you have to name call. Seriously really??? anyhow all you're doing is spitting out what the media's opinion says. The man has lived in Kentucky for 18 years, I beleive he has earned the right to be considered a citizen here and he has actually done more for Kentucky and the elderly people in his neighborhood than most of the people who sit on their butts in this sad jobless area waiting for their government handouts.

Teresa Melton (May 18, 2010)

I wouldn't vote for anyone that Mitch McConnell recommends. Democrats RULE! Kentucky voters are idiots and it really showed when President Obama won the election and Kentucky was the first state to post their Republican hogwash - and LOST! Mitch will put KY on the map all right-as close-minded idiots!
