Neighbor helps thwart burglary in Canadatown
Whitley County Sheriff's deputies are crediting an observant neighbor for helping to thwart a Sunday morning burglary.
Sheriff Colan Harrell said that about 11:06 a.m., Deputy Millard Root responded to a complaint about a possible burglary in progress at Onnie Meadors' White Oak Road residence in the Canadatown community.
A neighbor thought they saw someone prowling around inside Meador's residence and called police, Harrell said.
When Root responded to the area he observed Carolyn Petrey, 27, of Clifford Canada Road, walking on a road less than one mile from Meadors' residence.
Root stopped Petrey and discovered that she had four pocketknives, a watch and a ring, which had been taken from Meadors' residence, Harrell said.
Root charged her with second-degree burglary and lodged her in the Whitley County Detention Center.
Additional arrests are possible. Another knife and a couple of smaller items are still missing from Meadors' residence, which have not been recovered so far, Harrell added.
