JOHNSON SETS RECORD
Whitley County junior nails 11 treys
Whitley County junior Maria Johnson rattled the nets for 11 three-pointers Monday night in record-setting fashion as she led the Lady Colonels to a 66-33 win over Jackson County at Lawson Gym.
After struggling to beat hapless North Laurel, 41-36 last week and losing to Nelson County Saturday, 45-21, the Lady Colonels got some of their once high-powered offense in gear against Jackson County.
“We shot the ball better tonight,” Whitley County Coach Larry Anderson said. “It was nice to see Maria come out of her slump.”
Johnson hit five 3-pointers in the first half as Whitley County dominated the offensive end of the floor took a 37-18 lead to the dressing room at the half.
Johnson broke the school record for three-pointers in the second half when she hit her third long shot. The old record is seven threes in one game.
“She didn’t score in Saturday’s game against Nelson County,” Anderson said. “We were just undermanned in that game and she was doing the best that she could. She is trying to put a lot on her shoulders.”
Johnson scored as many as Jackson County had as a team, 33 points to lead the Lady Colonels.
Whitley County will get two tough tests this week to close out the regular season. They will play at Harlan County Wednesday and travel to Bell County Friday.
Whitley County (18-7) will take on South Laurel Tuesday in the first-round of the 50th District Tournament.
