Redhounds make Pigskin Classic statement, route Perry Central 36-8
Corbin defenders surround Perry County Central's quarterback and cause a fumble, leading to a safety in the second quarter of the nightcap of the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic Saturday.
Any concerns that Corbin Redhounds head coach Steve Jewell might have had coming into the 19th annual Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic Friday night quickly evaporated as his team cruised to a 36-8 victory against the visiting Perry County Central Commodores and improved to 2-0 on the season.
Offensive MVP Jake Coppock had a huge game, racking up over 130 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Also scoring for the Redhounds was junior wide receiver Harrison Reedy, who rushed for a touchdown and caught a pass for a two-point conversion, senior running back Taylor Waddle, who caught a pass for a score late in the first quarter, and senior wide receiver Cai Jackson, who rushed for a touchdown midway through the third.
Jackson was also involved in a defensive play that resulted in a safety late in the first half. Kicker Evan Grissell added on two extra points. The lone Perry Central score came with 1:49 left in the game when senior running back Tyler Fugate went 71 yards to pay dirt, and then caught a pass for a two-point conversion.
“We had a lot more offensive production this week,” said Jewell after the game. “Our linemen came off the ball well and understood their assignments, and our backs were able to block and run the ball effectively.”
Jewell also mentioned that he was pleased with junior quarterback Corey Taylor’s ability to pass the ball. “We’re still a work in progress,” he added. “But we’ve definitely made improvements.”
Speaking about his defense, which rendered Perry Central’s star running back, 6-2 225 lb. Devan Brewer, ineffective all night long, and picked off quarterback Nathan Pray on three separate occasions, Jewell said, “I feel like they played well last week, and they came to play again this week. We had a lot of different kids out there making plays for us tonight. The defense is really playing well right now.”
Looking forward to this Friday, Jewell’s Redhounds will have a long road trip ahead of them as they travel to face the Raiders of Trimble County (0-2). Two senior players lead the Raiders this season, and they have an impressive sixteen juniors on their roster as well. Although they have started out the 2013 campaign with two losses, they were competitive in each contest, and they come from a tough district that includes Carroll County and Walton-Verona, who had seven and ten wins last year respectively.
Game time Friday is set for 7:30.
