Williamsburg to take on Middlesboro today in All "A" finals

Update: The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will play for the 13th Region All “A” Classic Thursday at 5:30 at Middlesboro High School. Senior Jared Barton picked up a 6-3 win over the Barbourville Tigers to advance to the championship game.

The winner of the Williamsburg-Middlesboro will advance to the state tournament where they will play the winner of the 16th Region in early April.

Williamsburg moved into the semifinals of the 13th Region All “A” Baseball Tournament with a 17-0 win over the Lynn Camp Wildcats in five innings Monday at Briar Creek Park.

It was an easy win for Coach John Mountjoy’s team. Senior Hunter Williams took the mound for the Yellow Jackets. After giving up a hit to the first Lynn Camp batter, he struck out the next three to quickly put the Wildcats down.

Williamsburg then sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and came up with nine runs on four hits, four walks and three Lynn Camp errors. The Yellow Jackets rang up nine steals in the inning as well.

Junior Micah Purdie had a two-run triple in the inning while seniors Jared Barton and Donnie Bowlin had back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first. Junior Logan Hamblin had a RBI single in the inning as well.

Williams added three strikeouts in the top of the second to finish the day with six. The Yellow Jackets put the 10th run of the game on the scoreboard in the home half of the second when Purdie led off with a base hit to left field. He stole second, went to third on a balk then scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Ryan Bowlin came to the mound in the top of the third and held the Wildcats from scoring. He allowed only one runner to reach base in the three innings he pitched while striking out five.

Williamsburg put the game away in the bottom of the third when they added seven runs on seven base hits. Williams, Jonathan Teague, Dalton Sizemore, Purdie and Michael Dylan Rose all had consecutive singles to start the inning. Barton also had a two-run double.

Williamsburg 11, Bell Co. 0: The Jackets opened the season with an 11-0 win over Bell County last week at Log Mountain. Teague got the win for the Yellow Jackets, allowing only four hits in the game.

A two-run triple by Teague in the top of the first got the Yellow Jackets off to the quick start. Williams opened the game with a single and Donnie Bowlin followed by reaching base on an infield error.

In the third it was more of Teague as the junior had a two-run double, scoring Purdie and Williams for a 4-0 lead. Teague later scored in the frame to make it a 5-0 game.

Williamsburg added two runs in the top of the fourth then closed out the game with four runs in the sixth inning. Barton opened the inning with a single followed by a Purdie double. After Williams walked, Teague knocked in two runs for a 10-0 score. Teague scored the final run.

For the day Teague two runs, had six RBI’s and nine strikeouts on the mound.

“We’ve started pretty good,” Mountjoy said. “Everybody is getting used to things, so we have a lot of people still making adjustments and a lot of work still to do, but 2-0 is a good start.”

“We’re hitting the ball by working the counts which gives us good pitches,” Mountjoy said. “But, we are playing really good defense and the pitching has been good.”

Williamsburg was scheduled to play Barbourville in the semifinals of the All “A” Tuesday night. If the Yellow Jackets get past the Tigers they will play the winner of the OBI-Middlesboro game Thursday on the road.

“From what I hear Middlesboro and Jackson County are the favorites to come out of the top bracket,” Mountjoy said. “You can’t count out Barbourville because they are always competitive. I just hope Middlesboro and Jackson County have to throw their ace seven innings.

Middlesboro did beat the Generals in a 3-1 showdown and will take on OBI, a 5-2 winner over Pineville.
