Students at Boston Elementary School received a welcomed present Friday morning in the form of free school supplies.
Williamsburg Kiwanis Club President David Perry and member Steven Jett delivered the supplies to the kindergarten classroom of Janel Cupp and the first grade classroom of Barbara Lawson.
The general school supplies included items, such as pencils, paper, notebooks, folders, crayons and markers, that students can use on a day-to-day basis.
Boston Principal Carolyn Lawson said the donation is “very badly needed” in her school.
“Even though our students come equipped and our parents do an excellent job providing for their students. Any extra to provide for those, who are not able, is always appreciated. We thank the Kiwanis Club very much for that,” Lawson noted.
The project was organized and created by Linda Chagnon, who is the wife of Leigh Chagnon, the Kentucky-Tennessee District Kiwanis Governor.
Linda Chagnon, who is a former schoolteacher, started gathering the school supplies herself and then got help from other Kiwanis members.
Perry said that Linda Chagnon and Kiwanis members gathered enough school supplies for every club in the two-state district to get supplies to help two classrooms.
The supplies were distributed during the district convention about three weeks ago, Perry said.
After much consideration, the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club picked Boston, which has only one kindergarten classroom this year and one first grade classroom.
