A Spot on the Podium

Several student athletes competed at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Tournament hosted at the Kentucky Horse Park. Three student athletes from Corbin High School and one student from Whitley County High School made the podium at the tournament. Corbin Lady Redhound Avah Hammons earned the highest podium position of the local students with a 5th place finish in the girls’ tournament. Whitley County Colonel Landon Bryant finished 6th in the heavyweight division. BJ Jackson, from Corbin, took 7th place in the 138 weight class. Josh Goins took the number eight spot on the podium in the heavyweight division.

13th Region Basketball Tournament brackets announced

Teams advancing to the 2026 Martin's Peterbilt 13th Region Basketball Tournament now know who they will face later this week. Saturday morning's draw began with the girls bracket. Knox Central will take on Middlesboro to tip off the tournament at 6 p.m. on March 2. South Laurel and Clay County will play the night cap at 7:30 p.m. In day two, North Laurel will face Barbourville at 6 p.m. on March 3. Bell County and Whitley County will close out the night at 7:30 p.m. On the boys' side, games begin on March 4. District Tournament Tips Off

The Girls’ 50th District Basketball Tournament tipped off at Corbin’s Gilliam Gym Monday night. The first game saw the South Laurel Cardinals fly away with an 80-17 win over Williamsburg. During the nightcap, Corbin’s home court advantage was not enough to get them the win as they played their final game this season. Whitley County’s Lady Colonels will make their return to the region tournament after a 53-46 win over the Lady Redhounds.

Corbin Redhound Wrestling sending 10 wrestlers to state

Corbin is sending nearly one dozen Redhound wrestlers to the state tournament. On Saturday, the boys’ team finished third overall. Eight Redhounds will compete at the state tournament. BJ Jackson and Josh Goins each placed first in their respective divisions making school history as the first regional champions for Corbin’s wrestling program. Jackson was voted Region 7’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. On the girls’ side, Avah Hammons and Allison Neeley will compete at state after placing fourth in their respective classes. Bass fishing duo takes first place on Laurel Lake, reels in ‘big fish’

Whitley County coach named 13th Region KABC Coach of the Year

Whitley County Boys Basketball Head Coach Eric Swords was named the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Association’s 13th Region Coach of the Year.

Tues. Night Highlights: Whitley boys and girls pick up wins over Corbin

It was a big night for the Whitley County Colonels and Lady Colonels Tuesday, as both teams were able to secure important district wins over Corbin. The girls took the court first inside Charles M. Lawson Gymnasium, with the Lady Colonels managing to avenge a loss to Corbin earlier this season by securing a 52-39 win in the rematch. The victory improves the team to an even 10-10 on the season, and puts them at 3-2 in district play. The Lady Hounds, meanwhile, fall to 10-7, 2-2. The Whitley girls' last district game of the regular season will come next Tuesday, Feb. 10, at South Laurel. Corbin will play at Williamsburg...

Tues. Night Highlights: Whitley County at Corbin, Williamsburg at South Laurel

Regular season competition between 50th District opponents continued Tuesday night with a pair of double headers in Corbin and London as the Redhounds and Lady Hounds played host to Whitley County and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets traveled to South Laurel. South was dominant in both games against the Jackets, with the Lady Cards winning, 92-19, and the Cardinal boys winning, 79-12. The losses keep both Williamsburg squads winless in district play, but they will hope to have a better showing next Tuesday, Jan. 27, when they host Corbin in another double header. Corbin plays host to 2A sectional duals, Whitley Co. advances to Jan. 31 state duals

This past Saturday, the Corbin High School gymnasium hosted a wrestling competition for the very first time. Not just any competition, but this year’s 2A Section 5 duals. “The Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association puts it on,” CHS Head Coach Chuck Davis said of the duals, which included the Redhounds, Boyle County, Pulaski County, Wayne County, Madison Southern and the Whitley County Colonels. When asked about his feelings on CHS finally getting the opportunity to host a wrestling event, Davis said, “We usually wrestle at the middle school, so this is the first time that anyone has set foot in here to wrestle.
