The season will come to an end tonight for one local volleyball team. Both Whitley County and Corbin advanced to the 13th Region Championship game after semifinal wins on Monday. Whitley County defeated Bell County 3-0 sets for the win. Corbin took down Knox Central 3-0 sets to advance. The two teams met Tuesday night, but the game was not complete as of print deadline.

  Williamsburg recognized seven seniors on its football team Friday night ahead of its game against Harlan. Williamsburg earned a home playoff game after a 56-13 win over district opponent Harlan. The Yellow Jackets scored 16 points in the first quarter and 24 in the second to bring the score to 40-0 at half-time. They wouldn’t stop there. The Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room hot putting up an additional eight points with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter. Several local athletes competed in region cross-country meets on Saturday. Corbin competed in Morgan County in the Region 7 Class 2A meet. Lynn Camp, Williamsburg, and Whitley County all competed at Lynn Camp on Saturday in various region meets. Lynn Camp played host to three regional competitions on Saturday. Whitley County is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to Harlan County, 42-18, on Friday. The Colonels are currently 0-9 on the season. “We had a hard time tackling Morris and Sharp at Harlan County Friday night,” said Whitley County Interim Head Coach JB Donahue. “ could not get in a good rhythm on offense.” Whitley County freshman Braydan Rose threw the ball for 90 yards against the Black Bears. The Whitley County Colonels are headed to the volleyball state tournament for the fifth consecutive year. The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Redhounds in the teams’ seventh consecutive region championship meeting. Lynn Camp is 0-3 in district play after a 53-14 loss to Harlan Friday night. The Wildcats played a running game on Friday. The team rushed the ball for 92 yards on 30 carries. Freshman Bentley Morgan led the team recording 57 yards on 12 carries. Junior quarterback Conner Mabe kept the ball for 10 carries gaining 11 yards. One year after losing to Middlesboro on the road, Williamsburg broke its winning streak at home against the other Yellowjackets with a 64-22 loss. “We played well for most of the first half,” said Williamsburg Head Coach Jerry Herron. “Second half, we had a lot of unforced errors that lead to some big plays and scores along with a few unfortunate injuries that caused the game to get away from us.” Junior quarterback Reece Hatcher threw for 98 yards. Williamsburg Volleyball’s season came to an end Monday night after a 3-0 loss to Whitley County. Whitley County is the defending region champion. The Colonels met the Corbin Redhounds in the District Championship game Tuesday night, but the contest was not completed by print deadline.

Corbin’s perfect record against Whitley County remains intact after a 42-0 win on Friday. Since 1966, Corbin and Whitley County have met on the gridiron 27 times. Corbin has never lost. “We wanted to start fast and play clean,” said Corbin Head Coach Luke Salmons. “I thought we did that.” Corbin’s first points came with 10:04 left to play in the first quarter. The Redhounds ended the first quarter up 28-0. In the second quarter, the Redhounds would score again with 11:38 to play triggering a running clock.
