The Class of 2026 includes Chrissy Powers, James Sasko, Lucille Lankster, Luke Woods and the 1979/80 Whitley County Baseball Team. The University of the Cumberlands has a new softball coach. School officials announced Nicole Thompson would lead the Patriot softball program in the upcoming season in June. In a social media announcement, Thompson explained, “Clearly I have heard some great things about this place, of how special it is, the home feel of it, and so when the phone call came, it was a little bit of a surprise honestly and very humbled that they wanted my family and I to come down and check it out.” Thompson is the team’s fourth head coach since 2022. The greater Corbin area used to have not one but two golf courses. Both are now closed. I miss one of these courses. The second one not so much…LOL. I suspect many of you, who played both courses, probably agree with me. I am talking about the old Tri-County Country Club and Sweet Hollow Golf Course. A familiar face will lead the Williamsburg Jacket baseball program next spring. School officials announced Jasiah Baskett as the new head coach on social media on June 26. This spring, Baskett served as the team’s pitching coach. In addition to his role on the diamond, he also served as a substitute teacher. Baskett is originally from Elizabeth, New Jersey. He played college baseball at Union College of New Jersey and the University of Delaware. Prior to making the trip to Williamsburg, Baskett spent four seasons as an assistant coach with Elizabeth Minuteman and served as an assistant coach for the Randolph Chiefs of the MCBL Collegiate Summer Baseball League. In 1996, Greg Norman entered the final round of the Masters Golf tournament with six-shot lead over his closest competitor, Nick Faldo. When the day started, nearly everyone expected Norman to pull out the win and probably in big fashion. This wasn’t meant to be. Norman struggled and ended with a final round 78. Corbin’s Chloe Bays competed in the KY Prep East/West All-Star series June 19-21. All-Star players were selected by Kentucky Softball Coaches Association member coaches. Bays played on the East Juniors squad, which also included three South Laurel players, North Laurel coach Chris Edwards and South Laurel coach Carly Mink. On the baseball diamond, two local athletes competed in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game. Whitley County’s Luke Hillard and Corbin’s Trey Person competed in the class of 2027 game hosted at Centre College.

  Whitley County baseball’s trip to Lexington was short lived after a first round loss to Apollo, 5-3. The Colonels end the season 38-4.
