Community organizes events to support six year old diagnosed with DIPG

The Corbin community is rallying behind six-year-old Millee Kate Daugherty who was recently diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). A GoFundMe campaign has been launched and a 5k fundraiser is being organized. DIPG is a rare and aggressive brain tumor that primarily affects children. “She’s such a bright light,” said family-friend Sarah Reeves. “She is extremely intelligent… she’s a kind, sweet little girl.” According to Reeves, Daugherty has been involved in activities, such as playing softball with the Corbin league, dancing, crafting and spending time with her younger sister who she has a close bond with. “She is always smiling. The Corbin Arena announces plans for second entrance thanks to ‘earmarked’ funding

The Corbin Arena is getting a second entrance/exit and a new sign. Corbin City Manager Scott Williamson made the announcement during the Corbin City Commission’s monthly meeting Monday. “It is a big deal folks,” Williamson noted about the new entrance/exit. Where the second entrance/exit will go and when it will be built have not been determined yet. It is still in the planning stages. Senate President Robert Stivers’ office has advised the city funds for the new Arena entrance/exit have been earmarked. Stivers helped secure the funding working in conjunction with 86th Rep. Former prosecutor Tom Handy remembered for life of service

Former long-time prosecutor Tom Handy, who died Tuesday, led a life of service in his community both inside the courtroom and out of it. Handy served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Laurel and Knox counties for 28 years prosecuting some of the region’s highest profile cases before retiring in 2003. “Tom Handy was not only a visionary leader for Laurel County and Eastern Kentucky, he was a catalyst for change,” said U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers. Update: Foul play not suspected in Southern Whitley County fire death

Currently no foul play is suspected in the death of one person, whose body was found in the remains of a structure fire Sunday morning in Southern Whitley County, according to a Kentucky State Police (KSP) release. Whitley County Deputy Coroner Charles Steve Watson pronounced the victim dead at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Officials think the deceased was an adult and possibly female, Watson said. Coroner Andy Croley said Tuesday afternoon officials are still waiting on the results of DNA testing before making a positive identification of the deceased. A Corbin man died Monday during a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of Cumberland Falls Highway (US25W) and Ward Cemetery Road, which occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley pronounced John P. Canada-Love, 38, dead at the scene at 3:50 p.m. from multiple injuries he sustained during the incident. He died instantly in the crash. Canada-Love was on his way to work in Barbourville when the collision occurred. He was only approximately two miles away from home, Croley said. Sheriff’s deputy responding to fatal crash accidentally hits school bus

A Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy and five children were transported to the hospital by ambulance after a police vehicle collided with a Whitley County school bus Monday afternoon, but no one apparently required an overnight hospital stay, officials said. “We are just thankful it wasn’t worse than what it was,” said Whitley County Superintendent John Siler. “It was unfortunate, but we are just thankful there were no serious injuries.” Whitley County Sheriff Bill Elliotte echoed similar sentiments. McCullah appointed as new constable

Residents in Whitley County’s First District now have a new constable. Incumbent First-District Constable Lonnie Foley, who was unopposed in his bid for re-election, died on Jan. 24. Monday afternoon, Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. appointed Timothy McCullah to fill out the remainder of Foley’s current term in office, which expires at midnight on Dec. 31, 2026. Thursday evening, the Whitley County Republican Party Executive Committee unanimously chose McCullah as its nominee to be first-district constable. White pledged previously to appoint whoever the Republican nominee was as the replacement to fill out the remainder of Foley’s term in office so there would be continuity.
