Jared Martin will take over as Corbin High School athletic director after Tackett Wilson retires at the end of August. Martin was named assistant athletic director in February. He is a Corbin High School graduate, and he has spent more than a decade working as a teacher and coach. In a social media post, Martin said, “It means so much to have the opportunity to lead the Corbin athletics program and give back to the community that invested so much in me.”

Incoming senior Luke Hillard committed to play baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Whitley County shared Hillard’s announcement on social media Monday. As a junior, Hillard recorded 52 hits, 33 runs, and pitched 51 innings, according to KHSAA stats. Hillard took the mound in several key games including the 13th Region championship game and the team’s first round appearance in the 2026 Baseball State Tournament.

The Whitley County Lady Colonels Volleyball team are the 2026 Bluegrass State Games Gold Bracket Champions. The team made a 4-0 run in the gold bracket defeating Oldham County, Somerset, Trinity Christian Academy and Frederick Douglass.

The recent British Open certainly had an exciting finish. American Cameron Young, who birdied four out of his first five holes in the final round, got into the clubhouse early posting a score of 9-under-par for the tournament. Then he waited and waited for more than two hours to see whether anyone caught him. They did. New Zealander Ryan Fox kept plugging along birdieing Hole No. 13 and Hole No. 14. Approximately 40 athletes participated in the Whitley County High School baseball and softball fundamental camp on July 27-28. The two-day camp introduced players to the fundamentals of the game, including throwing, footwork, flexibility, stretching and more. The camp was designed to build confidence and develop their skills.

The Corbin Redhound Football coaches and players worked with students in grades kindergarten to eighth grade during the 2026 Redhound Football Youth Camp on July 24. The athletes worked on fundamentals, including tackling, route running, catching, throwing and turnovers. They also received a free meal and t-shirts.

It has been a busy summer for Corbin middle school and high school golfers. Corbin Lady Redhound golfer Makena Myatt competed in the LPGA USGA Girls Golf National Championship by PKBGT. The three-day tournament was played at Pine Needles in North Carolina. Myatt was one of 56 girls from across 16 countries, who competed. She finished in 10th place with a 10-over-par for the tournament. Myatt also competed in the 47th Kentucky Girls Junior Amateur at Frankfort Country Club where she finished in the top 10. The Williamsburg Volleyball team is getting a new head coach this season. Marissa Downs graduated from Williamsburg High School in 2024 and helped lead her team to the Elite 8 of the KHSAA State Volleyball Champion for two consecutive years. During her playing career, she was awarded All District and All Region multiple times and named 13th Region Player of the Year in 2023. She also received the Kentucky Colonel Award in 2024. “Coach Downs is excited to lead the sport she loves and continue the Williamsburg tradition of success in volleyball,” the school’s Facebook post said.

Corbin High School Volleyball Coach Krystal Jones said this year’s Lady Redhounds are entering the season with a focus that extends beyond wins and losses. “I try not to measure success of a season based on wins and losses,” said Jones. “When our girls leave this program, I’m far more concerned with the human they are than any stat they report or put up.” Jones said chemistry and accountability have become priorities throughout the program. “We’re competing here as one team, so that has been really fun to watch,” said Jones. “You can have the greatest players, but if you don’t have chemistry, it does not mean anything.” Jones said players use accountability...
