As Whitley County celebrates 60 years of football, the Colonels are headed into the 2026 football season with one goal. “ go from where we are to a little bit better and just keep stacking those days until, you know, we are, you know, really strong football program,” said Whitley County Head Coach Matt Rhymer. For the Corbin Redhound football program, a state championship run is not just a goal, it is an expectation. This season, the Redhound Faithful are celebrating 50 years since the 1976 state championship. “It's a great thing to honor and recognize,” said Corbin Redhound Head Coach Luke Salmons. “You know, they laid the groundwork for what we are today.” So, who are the Redhounds today? Corbin Redhound Volleyball alumni joined current members of the squad on August 13 for a scrimmage in the new Corbin Auxiliary Gym. The volleyball team also played a varsity and junior varsity scrimmage against Pulaski County ahead of the alumni game. On social media, the Corbin Redhound Volleyball team posted, “Getting to step onto that court and compete for the very first time was something special. What a privilege it is to call this place home!” The news gym is approximately 15,000 square feet and was built to be a multipurpose facility. Corbin High School golfers recently took a road trip to Jonesville, Virginia, to take part in the Farmers and Miners Bank Invitational high school golf tournament at Cedar Hill Country Club where they had a great showing with an individual win and a second-place team finish. Each year the Corbin High School Boy’s Golf Team and the Girl’s Golf Team join forces to play in the coed tournament. This year 87 boys and girls teed it up to crown the 2026 champions. Whitley County traveled to Lynn Camp on Aug. 6 for a scrimmage.  The Lynn Camp Wildcats won 20-6.

The Whitley County volleyball team welcomed back several alumni on Aug. 6 ahead of its Red/Black scrimmage and player introductions. The team is coming off a win at the 2026 Bluegrass State Games. The Lady Colonels are looking for a fifth consecutive 13th Region title this season.

Over the course of the last several years, we have had a few local golf courses close in the Tri-County area. Tri-County Country Club in Corbin was built in 1928 and closed in April 2015. Sweet Hollow Golf Course opened in 1995 and closed around 2014. Even Crooked Creek Golf Course in London, which was one of the nicest golf courses in the region, closed for a few years. Randall and Victoria Weddle purchased it in 2022, according to a Whitaker Bank Facebook post. Fortunately, it re-opened early this year as The Oaks Golf Course. Corbin baseball welcomes Brad McNew to its coaching staff. McNew has nearly 20 years of high school coaching experience including 14 seasons as head coach.
