Williamsburg recognized seven seniors on its football team Friday night ahead of its game against Harlan.
Williamsburg earned a home playoff game after a 56-13 win over district opponent Harlan.
The Yellow Jackets scored 16 points in the first quarter and 24 in the second to bring the score to 40-0 at half-time.
They wouldn’t stop there. The Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room hot putting up an additional eight points with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter.
Harlan would find the end zone approximately 4 minutes later to put up their first points of the game.
The Green Dragons would score one final time in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 56-13.
“We just came out, executed our offensive game playing very well,” said Williamsburg Head Coach Jerry Herron. “Defensive game plan – executed it well. Kids played extremely hard.”
Herron said his team came off a “hard, physical game” in week 9 against Middlesboro, but they were able to rebound and play hard to get the win over Harlan in week 10.
“[We] rebounded well this week,” said Herron.
That rebound included 269 passing yards from junior quarterback Reece Hatcher. Freshman quarterback added an additional 40 yards passing.
The team rushed for 117 yards on 20 carries.
On defense, freshman Brayden McCullah led the team with seven solo tackles. Junior Lane Jeffries added an additional five solo tackles including a sack and two tackles for loss.
Friday’s game also marked a special moment in the season – senior night.
“What an amazing class. You know they’ve won [two] district championships and a couple of runners-up here, so good bunch. Very good kids,” said Herron. “[They] work extremely hard. We’re just thankful to have them. Now, they earned another home game.”
Before they get to the post season, Williamsburg has one more road game.
The Yellow Jackets will head to Knox Central on Friday to take on the Panthers.
The Panthers are 6-3 on the season.
Williamsburg lost to Knox Central last year at home.
The Yellow Jackets have dropped 10 of the last 11 matchups against the Panthers.
“[We’ve] got a big game this week coming up with a big team in Knox Central,” said Herron. “They’ve had a lot of good games, a lot of physical teams… We just gotta play well, handle their physicality and see what we can do.”
