Corbin residents will have at least one new option in the 2016 race for city commission as Assistant Police Chief Bruce Rains has filed to run.
Rains, who is in his 30th year with the department, said prior to filing, he contacted the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office to determine if he was eligible while continuing to work with the Corbin Police.
“The AG’s opinion was, ‘Yes, you can run, but if you get elected, you will have to retire before you are sworn in,’” Rains said, noting he had previously intended to retire in 2016 no matter the outcome of the election.
Rains is a native of Corbin, attending Corbin schools and later graduating from Whitley County High School.
Joining Rains on the ballot for the four seats is incumbent Freddy “Bruce” Hodge, who will be seeking his second term in office.
Jan. 26 is the filing deadline for candidates to run in the May 17 primary election.
A primary election in the city commission race will be held if there are at least nine candidates.
