Car drives off with gas pump still in tank

Date:

West Knox firefighters were called to the Marathon gas station on U.S. 25W Friday night when a driver pulled away from the gas pump with the pump handle still in the car Friday night.

The pump laid on its side next to the concrete island.

A clerk at the station said the driver had just left the store about 8:30 p.m. after asking direction to St. Joseph London Hospital.

When the pump was torn away, the fuel supply immediately shut off.

"We didn’t spill any gas," the clerk said.

Firefighters warned that a spark could ignite the fumes in the air.

No one was injured in the incident.
