The 2017 high school tennis season officially wraps up this weekend at the KHSAA state championships in Lexington, but before that happens we have five more coverage area tennis players to meet in this week’s Senior Spotlight.
Bruce Hopkins has been playing tennis at Lynn Camp for the past four years. Perhaps most well-known for his ability on the basketball court, he said that competing in tennis is much different because he is all by himself in that environment.
Similar to many athletes at LCHS, Hopkins has participated in several different sports during his time as a Wildcats. In addition to basketball and tennis, he has also competed as a cross...

In boys doubles, the team of Brady Keith and Peyton Hamlin from Corbin defeated their opponents from Middlesboro in a very competitive matchup – 7-5, 5-7, 10-3. After the match, Keith said, “This feels great. I was confident coming in, but I also knew that it was going to be a tough match.”

After a strong showing in Bowling Green over the weekend, the tennis Hounds are now looking to go into spring break next week with a couple more victories under their belts. This time last year Jaclyn Jewell was competing as a senior member of the Corbin High School tennis team. Along with her doubles partner, Ellie Jane Carloftis, she would go on to finish in the top eight at the 2016 KHSAA state championships – the farthest she had ever advanced in all her years competing at the state level, both as a middle school and a high school athlete.
Now Jewell has taken her game to the next level as a freshman member of the University of the Cumberlands women’s tennis team. The Patriots currently stands at 5-5 this spring, with a big match against visiting Georgetown College scheduled for...

Among those athletes gearing up for the beginning of a new spring sports season are local high school tennis players, many of whom have been taking advantage of the warm weather that we have been experiencing recently.
Whitley County Tennis Head Coach David Halcomb said, “In years past we’ve not gotten outdoors much at all before the start of a season, but in the last couple of weeks we’ve had four-or-five really good days where we have been able to get out and do some stuff. That has been a big plus for us.”
Halcomb is excited about the upcoming season, with several young competitors on his roster ready to make...
