CHS student-athlete selected to serve on KHSAA Student Advisory Council

Date:

Being a student-athlete can potentially open doors to new and exciting opportunities for growth and development. Case in point, the Kentucky High School Athletics Association’s (KHSAA) Student Advisory Council. This group is comprised each year of promising young men and women from across the state, and in 2024-25 it includes Corbin High School’s own Haley Carr.

“The school has to nominate you, then there is an application process and a Zoom interview,” explained Carr, who is a tennis player soon-to-be beginning her senior year at CHS.

Carr said that her appointment to the KHSAA Student Advisory Council will last for a year, and that she got to meet her fellow council members for the first time recently when the group attended the four-day National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis.

“We learned a lot about leadership skills and networking,” Carr said of the summit. “It helped prepare us for September, when we will come back to the KHSAA headquarters in Lexington to do our own smaller version of the conference.”

At the September conference, Carr said that the Student Advisory Council will get to hear some special guest speakers and have the chance to be involved in planning upcoming activities. Most importantly, the group will be coming together to decide on a community service project. Currently, she says that a collective effort to help combat homelessness is at the top of the list for potential projects.

Going back to the recent trip to Indy, Carr said the experience was “eye opening,” and she appreciated getting the chance to meet and collaborate with student-athletes from several different states. She was also excited about getting the opportunity to help out with some Special Olympics activities during her time in the city.

As for this year’s KHSAA Student Advisory Council, Carr said, “We have some great individuals on our team. They are all super-hard workers, and I am excited that I get to be a part of it.”

In addition to playing tennis at Corbin, Carr is also involved with the Rotary Club, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honors Society. She said that she is excited about her upcoming senior year, as she is making plans to wrap up her high school career on a high note while also getting a jump start on some college courses.

In the future, Carr said that she currently plans on majoring in marketing and minoring in communications in college. She said that she might like to use her education to pursue a career in sports marketing or management.
