The Corbin and Williamsburg track and field teams rose above the competition at Saturday’s SEKC meet at University of the Cumberlands, with Corbin securing a first place finish on the boys side and a second-place finish on the girls side, and Williamsburg coming away with a first-place finish for the girls, and a runner-up finish for the boys.
“We had a really good day,” Yellow Jackets Head Coach John Harris said of the meet. “We had a lot pf PR’s for our kids. The girls really came out strong, and I feel like we maximized our boys the best we could. This is a strong group, and they’re moving in the right direction.”
Tyler Harris, head coach of the Redhounds, said of his team’s performance, “This makes back-to-back SEKC championships for our boys, so having some continuity in the program is good.”
“This team is full of hard workers, and they’re just fun to coach. I feel like we’re finally starting to turn the corner, and I couldn’t be more pleased.”
Among the top finishes on the day from Williamsburg were Danasia Buchanon (first place, 100 M hurdles and high jump), Fhazanah Jackson (first place, 100 M dash), Selena Mattingly (first place, 800 M run, 1,600 M run and 3,200 M run), Dalton Shackleford (first place, 110 M hurdles), Garrett Faulkner (first place, 1,600 M run), Tanner Boggs (first place, long jump) and Dakota Dunn (first place, shot put).
The Jackets also took first place in the female 4×100 and 4×200 M relays.
Top finishes for Corbin included Hannah Henegar (first place, pole vault), Mady Thompson (first place, triple jump), Dustin Simpson (first place, 400 M dash), Kenny Hopper (800 M dash), Caleb Myers (first place, pole vault), and Drew Carter (first place, triple jump).
The Redhounds also earned first place finishes in the boys 4×200 and 4×400 M relays, as well as the girls 4×400 and 4×800 M relays.
Several meets involving our coverage area track teams are scheduled to take place between now and region competition in mid-May. Among them are the South Laurel Invitational this Saturday, April 25, and the First Priority Meet of Champions on Saturday, May 2 at Univ of the Cumberlands.
