Knox County Work Release escapee recaptured Tuesday

Date:

An escapee from a Knox County Work Release detail was recaptured Tuesday morning in Gray.

Knox County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Anthony Lee Smith, 29, of Bimble during a traffic stop on Sam Parker Road, off of U.S. 25E.

Deputy William Stewart, the department’s public affairs officer, stated that Deputy Bobby Jones conducted the traffic stop around midnight, during which, the passenger, later identified as Smith, initially provided him with false identifying information.

Upon learning of Smith’s true identity, dispatchers informed Jones that Smith was wanted after escaping from the work detail on March 6.

A warrant had been issued for Smith, charging him with second-degree escape.

Smith was taken into custody and returned to the Knox County Detention Center.

In addition to the warrant, Smith was charged with identity theft and giving officer false identifying information.

Smith was also wanted in Knox County on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of second-degree possession of a controlled substance.

Smith is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.
