On Monday, a special reception was held at Campbell Field in Corbin for the Redhound football program’s newest head coach, Luke Salmons.
Salmons comes to Corbin from Cabell Midland High School in West Virginia, where he led that school’s varsity football program to a combined record of 118-37 across 13 seasons. The team never had a losing season with him at the helm, and they finished as state runner-up in 2012 and 2019.
“I’m about God, family, and football,” Salmons said to the crowd in attendance at Monday’s meet-and-greet. “Coach [Tom] Greer is leaving a great program here with a great group of assistant coaches and great support from a great community. Our football team is going to be about these kids and this community. It’s not about me. I’m just here to guide it and direct it, and play at a high level.”
“This place is special,” Salmons added. “It’s not like this at too many places. To see that is what drew me here. I have four boys, and this is what I want my kids to be a part of.”
Salmons concluded his brief talk by saying, “I guarantee you one thing… we’re going to win a lot of games, we’re going to have a lot of fun, and we’re going to do it together.”
Salmons is taking over a Redhounds program that has gone 46-5 in four seasons under Head Coach Tom Greer, including a state runner-up finish in 2022. The Hounds will open the 2024 season on August 23 against the defending Class A state champion Pikeville Panthers in this year’s Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic.
