Oak Grove firefighters were ready and set to respond to a trailer fire Monday morning but when they hit the gas in one truck to go, a support column on the fire station went with it.
Firefighters were leaving the station on U.S. 25W at 7:04 a.m. en route to a structure fire on Crawford Lane.
According to officials at the fire department, a compartment door on one of the pumper trucks had been left open. The firefighter closed it before pulling out of the station. However, it was not secured. When the truck pulled out of the bay, the door came open, striking the support column, pulling down the exterior brickwork, and tearing apart the wood framing.
The compartment door was torn from the truck as well. Firefighters said both the building and truck are repairable.
Oak Grove Fire Capt. James Smith said two of the four truck bays at the station, along with the remainder of the building are still useable.
Engineers and insurance adjusters are scheduled to come to the station Thursday to examine the damage.
The cost to repair the damage has not been estimated.
Firefighters needed more than two hours to extinguish the blaze that destroyed the unoccupied trailer.
