The importance of finding joy

Date:

Times are tough out there for a lot of folks. There is no doubt about that. There is no shortage of stress and anxiety as the cost of living only ever seems to go up, and with so much uncertainty concerning the future. Because of this, I think it is important, especially at this time of year, to really try to find joy everywhere that we possibly can in the here-and-now.

Those who know me well may find me saying this a bit surprising. I have never been what you would call an eternal optimist, but as I get older, I am learning that just about the only thing that we have any sort of real control over is how we approach situations as they are happening right here and right now. Only God knows what the future holds, which is where faith comes in. I think this is another lesson that can only be learned through time and experience, but each individual person is probably different in that regard.

With all of that being said, I have really been making an effort recently to find joy wherever I can. For example, my recent experiences with visiting the Whitley County Health Department’s Holiday Health and Safety Open House, and dropping in on the AA Women’s Services Center’s “Wrap for a Cause” fundraiser at 17th Street Christian Church in Corbin. Both events really helped brighten my spirits, and I encourage you to read all about them in this week’s special Season’s Greetings sections.

I have also been encouraged by the response to our holiday subscription food drive promotion here at the News Journal. This is an idea that our office manager, Linda Carpenter, came up with a while back. We all thought it was a really great idea, so for the past several weeks we have been offering a special discount on new and renewal subscriptions for anyone who has brought in canned or non-perishable food items for donation to a local food pantry. I am happy to say that many folks have taken advantage of this opportunity to help out a good cause while getting a discount on their subscriptions. I look forward to delivering all of the donations soon so that they can be distributed to those who are in need.

There have been several events in recent weeks where people’s generosity have been on full display. The list includes annual Shop with a Cop/Sheriff/Trooper events and the annual Empty Stocking Fund gift giveaway, all of which have once again helped to ensure that area kids and their families will have something to celebrate this Christmas. Add to this various Angel Tree projects, Toys for Tots, Operation Christmas Child, and ongoing efforts by other civic groups in the community, such as the Corbin Lion’s Club, and it makes you feel good to know that so many people are dedicated to making a positive difference.

Speaking of making a positive difference, the Corbin White Flag Ministry, as well as the newly formed White Flag Ministry in London, are continuing to do great work feeding and sheltering people during the harsh cold of the winter months. Great job to both of these ministries, as well as all who are volunteering to help them in their good work.

Area schools have presented some fantastic concerts and plays recently. This includes the annual Christmas concert at Corbin Middle School, which my son, Connor, performed in as a member of the percussion section. Everyone did a fantastic job, as always. The whole family was there to watch, and we were all very proud.

Area churches have also been presenting annual Christmas programs, and it has been great to see everyone posting about those on social media. Attending church services at this time of year is special for obvious reasons. Whether it be with music, singing, watching a youth group production, hearing a particular sermon, or all of the above, it is always important to remember and honor the true meaning behind the season.

Downtown Christmas parades, light displays, special appearances by Santa Claus… I could go on and on with things I have either seen, or am aware of, that have helped to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter and a little merrier. I hope that you have benefitted from at least one or two of these.

Of course, joy can always be found while spending quality time with family and friends. Whether gifts are being exchanged, a meal is being shared, or we’re just sitting around telling stories over a cup of coffee or hot cocoa, we should cherish every moment that we are able to spend with our loved ones.

Merry Christmas!
