Verneda Smith Sturgill, age 91, of Corbin, Kentucky, left this earth for her Heavenly home on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Baptist Health Corbin.
Born January 7, 1932, in Corbin, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Marie McKeehan Smith.
Verneda was a graduate of Woodbine High School and later worked at Vanbeber Drug, then Buchanan Jewelry, and Sears-Roebuck.
Verneda was a member of First Baptist Church. In years past, she enjoyed teaching the Juniors Class at Corinth Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and attending services when she was able. She also deeply loved her family, as well as nature and crafts.
In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Sturgill, whom she married in 1960; brother, Verldon K. Smith and his wife, Billie Sears Smith; brother, Vernon “Toby” Smith; and brother-in-law, Ralph Hickey.
Verneda leaves behind her sister, Verna Lee Smith Hickey Bruce and husband Edward Bruce; sister-in-law, Wordelle Smith; nephews, Michael Smith of Lexington, Darwin Smith of Florida, Randall Smith of Lexington, Gary Hines of Minnesota, and Rick Hines of Atlanta, Georgia.
Verneda was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Funeral services was Monday, January 30, in the Hart Funeral Home Chapel with Alex Lockridge, Paul Sims, and Jeremiah Banks officiating.
Pallbearers were Ozene McKeehan, Jason Tuttle, Aaron Tuttle, Ken Lundy, Calvin Fields, David Goins, and Mike Lovelace. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Bob Mackey, Randall Smith, Darwin Smith, and Michael Smith.
Burial followed in Corinth Cemetery.
Hart Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
