When the Nibroc Festival is over workers move fast with cleanup

Date:

And just like that, downtown Corbin is transformed back to normal over night after the Nibroc Festival.

Don Estep is publisher of the News Journal.

Until late Saturday night the street is filled with thousands of people attending concerts, the carnival and shopping at the many vendor stands.

Then on Sunday morning, when people are making their way to church, there is no sign of what has taken place the previous four nights. The carnival is gone, the signs are taken down, the vendors have disappeared and the trash has been picked up.

What an effort this takes. Bruce Carpenter, the Chamber of Commerce, city workers, volunteers and all others who take part are to be commended for making this happen.

Other than raining on our parade, the 72nd Nibroc Festival was a success. Other than the short period of rain, the heat we had the previous week moved out and we had pleasant temperatures.

Speaking of picking up the trash, those who work at that job are to be commended. People in Corbin have had an increase of two dollars monthly for trash pickup. That is okay because the cost is justified.

This doesn’t just relate to Corbin, but rather to all cities and trash companies everywhere. The cost of picking up your weekly trash is not justified.

The cost of your utilities, like water and electricity, are based on how much you use. But no matter how much trash you have, most generally the cost is the same for everybody.

I was talking to a widow woman last week and she said she usually has one small bag of trash each week and it wasn’t fair that she had to pay the same as those who fill a big garbage can, plus have bags stacked on top and beside the can. She is right.

I don’t have the answer to this problem, but it is one of the few things we pay for that is totally out of balance and in this computer age you would think somebody would discover a way of making it fair for all.

• Because I strongly opposed changing a section of Roy Kidd Avenue to one-way, I’ll admit that it has not caused a huge problem. But still, most people don’t like it. Coming down Gordon Hill the longest I have had to wait is through three changes of the traffic light, but that rarely occurs.

And like everybody else, I can’t wait until the road work is finished on both the north and south end of Corbin. However, the work was needed and it will improve the area greatly.

As for the roundabout on 5th Street road near the primary school, that is a great improvement. I know from taking my grandchildren to school and cutting left on a blind curve going back home. It is much safer now.

So, now why, why, why won’t the state fix Kentucky Street in Corbin? We’re waiting!
