Williamsburg woman dies in single-vehicle crash Monday

A Williamsburg woman died Monday as the result of a single-vehicle crash, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

According to Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley, 24-year-old Gwendala Hurst was driving a vehicle west on Wolf Creek Road Monday when her car left the roadway, striking multiple trees, then flipping. She was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

A passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured and was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 11 Trooper Mike Witt. Croley said toxicology tests are being conducted and that results are pending.

Assisting at the scene of the crash was Whitley County EMS, Whitley County Emergency Management, Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, Emlyn Volunteer Fire Department and Air Evac.
