11 people, dog escape blaze, but two birds not so lucky

Date:

Although this Rains Street home is still standing, firefighters say it suffered extensive damage during an early Tuesday morning blaze and is considered a complete loss.

An early morning fire Tuesday claimed the lives of two birds inside a house, but 11 people, including four young children, and a dog escaped the blaze.

The fire at 245 Rains Street was reported about 12:12 a.m. Tuesday.

“It was called in there was a possible entrapment. Luckily, the first firefighter on the scene found that all the people were out,” said Williamsburg Fire Chief Larry Todd. “However, following protocol we confirmed that the house was clear.”
