Redbud Trail Quilt Guild meets the challenge

Date:

A member of the Redbud Trail Quilt Guild was contacted by one of the interior designers from L.V. Harkness, working on the Kentucky Mansion Celebration project. They were asked if the Redbud Trail Quilt Guild could make and donate two twin size quilts for a guest bedroom at the Lieutenant Governor’s Mansion in Frankfort, Ky. Visiting dignitaries would use the room. The quilts needed to be alike or very similar since they will be in the same room and each big enough to cover a twin bed. The log cabin pattern was requested as part of the decorators theme for the room. The biggest part of the challenge was that the quilts couldn’t be started until June 16 and they needed to be in place by July 24.

The guild, on a regular basis, contributes quilts to a number of charities and raffles one at the Redbud Festival each year to help defray the cost of the other projects they do. The guild put aside other projects, started sewing after the regular meeting, then got together the following couple of weeks to piece the log cabin blocks and then assemble the quilt top from them. Due to the short time frame, there was not enough time to hand quilt them so they were sent out to A1 Sewing Center in Corbin to be machine quilted and then back to the guild for the binding.

At the July meeting, the quilts were presented to Rob Hampton, one the decorators for the project.

The house will be open for the public to tour on Sept. 19 and for $10 individuals can see the Mansion at 420 High Street, Frankfort.

If you would like to be part of the local Redbud Trail Quilt Guild then you may attend their meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at the Knox County Extension Office in Barbourville, Ky. They have members from Whitley and Knox County. For more information, contact Sue Dee at 606-549-2181 or e-mail her at 2sue@wildblue.net.
