Drunk man accused of crashing moped with beers dangling from it

Date:

A Knox County man spent three days in jail and must pay $718 in fines and court costs after admitting he was intoxicated when he wrecked his moped Friday night.

Fifty-six-year-old Roy Bright pleaded guilty to one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants at his arraignment Monday in Knox District Court.

Judge Wendell “Skip” Hammons sentenced Bright to the three days he had served in jail and ordered that he pay the fines and court costs by October 16.

Knox County Sheriff’s Sergeant Carl Frith was called to the scene of the crash on Ky. 830 in Corbin.

“When Sgt. Frith arrived he observed four beers on the moped,” said Deputy William Stewart, the department’s public affairs officer.

In addition to the DUI charge, Bright was served with an outstanding warrant out of Knox County charging him with public intoxication in a public place – third or greater offense within 12 months and a warrant out of Laurel County on a charge of taking fish under the legal size limit.

Bright was arrested and lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
