Mayor Willard McBurney signed a proclamation declaring September “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in the city of Corbin. Candace Keith, Reed Elliotte and Shannon Cox, who have each battled cancer, were on hand with members of their family to witness the signing, along with members of the Corbin City Commission. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and 15 years of age, and is detected in more than 13,500 of the country’s young people each year. Childhood cancers are of unknown origins and occurs rapidly regardless of lifestyle, spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class or geographic region, and is increasing at a greater rate than any other age group.
