Thanks to the efforts of a Corbin church, the South Union-Mt. Zion Baptist Association and VFW Post 3167 in Williamsburg, 10 more children will have a more special Christmas this holiday season.
Southside Baptist Church in Corbin and the association presented the Williamsburg Police Department with a $500 donation Thursday morning for the Williamsburg Police Department Shop with a Cop program.
Shop with a Cop takes less fortunate children on $100 shopping sprees at Wal-Mart at Christmas time.
The donation was funded largely through a gospel singing held at the Williamsburg Gospel Barn. No admission was charged but donations were accepted and church members sold concessions at the event.
Southside Pastor James Roaden, who couldn’t be present for Thursday’s donation, came up with idea for the project.
His wife, Lisa Roaden, and South Union-Mt. Zion Baptist Association Director Steven Jett stood in for him, and thanked the Gospel Barn and all the volunteers who took part in the effort.
Lisa Roaden said the church plans to make this an annual project.
“We believe in our law enforcement agencies especially the guys out there keeping us safe,” Jett noted.
During a special called Williamsburg City Council meeting Thursday afternoon, VFW Post 3167 presented another $500 check to Shop with a Cop.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to Shop with a Cop can drop it off at Williamsburg City Hall or the South Union-Mt. Zion Baptist Association office in Williamsburg.
The 13th Annual Williamsburg Police Department Shop with a Cop program will take place on Dec. 14 at the Williamsburg Wal-Mart.
