Blaze destroys old church early Sunday

An old abandoned church off Highway 1804 was completed destroyed during a fire early Sunday morning.

South Whitley Volunteer Fire Department was notified about the blaze, which was located at 1224 Highway 1804, at 1:45 a.m. Sunday,

South Whitley Chief Wayne Honeycutt that officials aren’t sure what caused the fire, but the building had no electricity running to it.

Honeycutt said that it is his understanding the building was being used as storage for a church in Jellico, but hadn’t been used for church services in quite some time.

Emlyn Volunteer Fire Department provided tanker support. Firefighters were on the scene for over two hours extinguishing the blaze.

Several people in the area were contacted, but no one was sure what the name of the church used to be.
