Looking for a responsible way to dispose of those old tires that have been taking up space in your garage, but don’t want to pay the disposal fee? If you are in Whitley County this week then look no further than the Waste Tire Program.
The Waste Tire Program is an event held by the Kentucky Division of Waste Management in coordination with each county. Each county does this event every three years and that allows individuals to dispose of their old tires for free.
They then recycle the tires.
Trunk or passenger tires are accepted, as long as they are not solid foam filled tires. Tires on rims are also accepted in a separate pile.
The last event saw between 60,000 and 70,000 tires disposed in just three days, and this week’s event is expected to be just as successful.
But why is this program so important?
As Whitley County Projects Director Amber Owens explained, historically there have been issues with illegal dumping, leading to tire dumps and garbage dumps in our waterways. The Waste Tire Program provides a safe and responsible way to prevent tires from ending up in our rivers and causing further harm to the environment.
If you have old tires that need to be disposed of, the Waste Tire program is a great option, Owens said.
Mark your calendars for this Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. – noon, and head over to the Whitley County Sanitation Transfer Station, which is located at 535 Happy Hollow Road in Williamsburg, to dispose of your old tires for free.
