Date:

Harlan senior to be John Smith hit nine three-pointers and scored 31 points to lead the 13th region to a 140-116 win over the 12th region all-stars in the 4th Annual Gene Lowe Junior All-Star Game Monday night at South Laurel High School.
Corbin senior to be Josh Hamlin was the lone local player named to the team by the 13th region coaches.
Game Director Roscoe Denny said, “The coaches nominate the players then vote on them.”
Hamlin scored only two points but did an outstanding job running the team. “I had loads of fun,” Hamlin said. “Playing the game with the best players in the 13th region was an honor.”
“It was really pretty fun playing with everyone else,” he said.
Hamlin said he was preparing for his final season of high school with a good summer schedule. “Coach “P” (Tony Pietrowski) has a pretty good schedule,” said Hamlin. “We will be young again but real good by the end of the season.”
Hamlin was runner-up to South Laurel Jordan Hammonds in the three-point contest. They both hit 12 shots in the first-round then tied again in the finals. They had to have a third shoot-out to determine the winner.
Smith stole the show, hitting nine three pointers and scoring 31 points. Ty Proffitt, the grandson of Mr. Lowe, had 20 points. The 12th region was led by Southwestern’s Jonathan Edwards with 26 while Pulaski County’s John Perkins had 24 points.
The 13th region ran out to a comfortable lead in the early minutes of the game, the 12th region battled back and the teams were tied at the end of the first 10-minute quarter, 35-35.
The 12th region eased ahead at the half, 68-61 before the 13th region all-stars turned up the notch in the second half. The 13th region led 103-86 at the end of three quarters
