Onkst remembered as public servant who loved Corbin

Even after his playing days as a member of the Corbin Redhounds football team, Alan Onkst continued to make an impact in the community as a businessman, city commissioner, police officer, member of the Corbin Tourism Commission and member of the Redhound Varsity Club. “He loved to serve,” said Terry Joe Martin, who was friends with Onkst for more than 50 years and worked with him as a member of the Redhound Varsity Club. Robbery charge amended against Knox County man

A Knox County man was arrested for the alleged robbery of a scooter. Joseph Burley Elliott, 26, of Gray, was arrested on July 4 at approximately 11:13 a.m. for the robbery. Elliott allegedly, “swung his fist at the victim and threatened him as he rode off on the victim’s scooter,” the victim told police. The victim was able to tell the police that he believed the suspects first name to be Joseph. Officers were familiar with Elliott and gave a brief description of Elliott to the victim who said that sounded like him. W’burg woman pleads guilty to domestic violence charge

A Williamsburg woman pleaded guilty Monday to a domestic violence charge in Laurel County stemming from an incident that occurred at an apartment off of American Greeting Card Road Friday night in Laurel County. Brittany Nicole Cunningham, 21 appeared before Judge John Chappell for arraignment on charges of fourth-degree assault – domestic violence, alcohol intoxication in a public place and second-degree disorderly conduct. Court officials said Cunningham pleaded guilty to each of the charges. In return for the guilty plea, Judge Chappell sentenced her to 90 days in jail, ordering her to serve seven days. Wandering two-year-old leads to abuse charge for Lily woman

A Lily woman has been charged with criminal abuse after a social worker reportedly found her two-year-old child wandering around alone outside wearing nothing but a top Thursday morning. Bailey Myrann Karr, 19 is facing one count of first-degree criminal abuse. Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies were called to Richland Drive off of East Ky. 552 at approximately 11:50 a.m. after the social worker, who was in the area on an unrelated complaint, found the child. “When deputies arrived at the scene they noted that the child’s hands were covered in paint and she had a severe bruise on her left eye,” Acciardo stated....

Whitley County Bicentennial BBQ Cookoff draws good crowd

Whether it was chicken legs on the bone, barbeque ribs, barbeque pork or shredded barbeque chicken, the cooks at the Whitley County Bicentennial BBQ Cookoff had a little something for everyone. Half a dozen cooks took part in the first ever event outside the Whitley County Courthouse Saturday. Williamsburg Fire Department getting first ever ladder truck

The Williamsburg Fire Department will soon have its first ladder truck. During Monday’s regular monthly meeting, the Williamsburg City Council approved the purchase of a used 100-foot aerial platform 1999 Sutphen Custom Fire Apparatus fire truck, and financing for the purchase. “It has some nicks and bangs, but everyone is tickled to death,” noted Mayor Roddy Harrison. “I think we have a pretty good buy.” He said that Charles Wynn has been helping the city for years in its effort to locate and purchase a ladder truck, and that this one came from Florida. The voice of Corbin Redhound Football is set to return to the sound booth after being forced off the air during the recent primary election. Ronnie Bowling, who won the Republican primary for Commonwealth Attorney in May, is a life long native of Whitley County. He played football for Corbin High School before attending and playing football at the University of the Cumberlands. W’burg police drug investigation leads to federal indictment

A federal grand jury has indicted two men for conspiring to distribute drugs in Whitley County last year thanks in part to a Williamsburg Police Department investigation. On May 24, 2018, Danny Ray Vanover and David Lee Davis were indicted in U.S. District Court in London and charged with conspiracy to distribute Oxycodone and Oxymorphone. Between Feb. 25, 2017, and March 14, 2017, the pair allegedly conspired in Whitley County to knowingly and intentionally distribute Schedule II controlled substances, including a quantity of Oxycodone and Oxymorphone pills, according to their indictment.
