With rising summer temperatures, Baptist Health emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, especially for vulnerable populations, as advised by Dr. Amy Martin Higgins, MD, of Baptist Health Primary Care London.
Dr. Higgins emphasizes that older adults, young children, pregnant women, people taking specific medications, and the immunocompromised are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
“These groups face unique challenges in regulating body temperature,” she explained. “Heat exhaustion, marked by symptoms like thirst, overheating, fatigue, nausea, and muscle soreness, is a common issue we see in our emergency department.”
To stay safe during hot weather, Dr. Higgins recommends:
Staying hydrated with water and electrolyte-containing fluids before and during sun exposure.
Wearing loose, light-colored clothing.

A London man has been indicted on multiple sexual-related charges involving a child.
Andrew Hedrick, 39, was named in a four-count indictment on Friday, with a Laurel County grand jury formally charging him with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse and possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.
According to the indictment, the alleged incidents began as far back as January 2015. Based on the victim’s date of birth listed in the indictment, they would have been as young as five when the alleged abuse began.
The indictment claimed that Hedrick sexually abused the victim from sometime in January 2015 until December 2020.

The Corbin Rotary Club recently handed out $1,000 scholarships to 10 local graduating high school seniors from Corbin High School and Lynn Camp High School as part of their annual scholarship program.
The scholarship money was raised through the annual Corbin Rotary Club Golf Scramble. Students were selected through an application process and an interview.
The scholarship recipients had impressive community service hours in addition to other accomplishments. Corbin High School seniors receiving scholarships included: Addyson Henson, Reid Bryant, Haley Carr, Hannah Perry, Conner Middleton, Addison Bonham, Gavin Hughes, Lindsay Jones and Riley Lewis. Lynn Camp High School’s Alexis Girtley also received a scholarship.

Starting Friday (June 27), you can start licensing your all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) and other special purpose vehicles in the Whitley County Clerk’s Office, which is in the old courthouse in Williamsburg. This will make those vehicles street-legal to drive on many roadways, but this won’t include most roadways in Whitley County, at least for the time being.
Starting Friday (June 27), vehicles like this ATV won’t just be for off-roading any more. A new state law will allow many of these vehicles to be licensed for street use. It will be up to each county to decide whether to allow them on their roads.
