At its Board of Control meeting Thursday morning, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association discussed the possibility of adopting further changes to the 2020 fall sports season. In the end, however, the board voted to keep the current plan in place that would have athletes being able to officially begin practices on Monday, August 24. In a nearly three-hour online board of control meeting Tuesday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association has outlined how school sports should proceed as we enter into the fall season. KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett spoke early on during Tuesday’s meeting saying that he and other association officials have been closely monitoring all data concerning COVID-19 in the state. Former Corbin High School golf coach Brad Harris is presenting his annual junior golf camp at the Better Golf Practice Place driving range and putt-putt course in Lily. This is the camp’s fourth year, and the second year at this location. There are four sessions to choose from. Session one is already in progress, and will conclude on Thursday, June 18. Session two will run from June 22-25, session three will run from June 29-July 2 and session four will run from July 6-9.  Instruction will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon each day. The 21st Annual Whitley County High School Golf Scramble has been scheduled to take place at the London Country Club on Friday, June 12 with a 9:00 a.m. start time. The scramble will feature four-person teams with an entry fee of $400 per team. There will be prizes awarded for first and second place teams, and lunch will be served after the competition. A special hole-in-one prize on hole nine has been provided courtesy of Tim Short Motors. Friday morning, Corbin High School senior golfer John-Austin Childress signed on to compete at the next level as a member of the Midway University men’s golf team. “It’s a bag of emotions,” said Childress’ coach and father, Brian Childress. “John-Austin has worked hard to get where he’s at, and I’m just really proud of him. This has been one of his goals ever since he started playing golf. Williamsburg sophomore Morgan Owens-Lewis has qualified to compete in this year’s KHSAA golf state championship tournament, taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bowling Green Country Club. Owens-Lewis shot a 79 at the region championship meet, held this past Monday at the Burnside Island State Park golf course. That was good enough to qualify her for state, making her the only coverage area golfer that will be making the trip next week. This is Owens-Lewis’ first time competing on the state championship stage, although she did appear in the All “A” state championship tournament earlier this month at the Woodson Bend golf course in Somerset.
