UC Archery hit the road this past weekend looking to capture their second straight USIAC 3D National Championship in Carrier Mills, Illinois. With 18 teams competing this past weekend, the Pats knew it would be a tough road to another title, but with some phenomenal performances combined with the consistent shooting efforts, UC came away with the USIAC 3D National Championship. The Lion’s Chase 5K saw a record turnout this year, with over 650 participants signing up in hopes of bringing home the obstacle race’s coveted championship sword. “This was our fifth year,” said director Jeff Sparks. “We started with around 225-250 runners, and we have seen exponential growth every year. The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Wrestling team has had a long history of success and look to continue that success in the upcoming 2016-17 season. One Patriot wrestler is continuing off her success from last season as she recently competed against some of the best in the world last week as a member of Team USA in a major world championship event. Sophomore Maya Nelson (Denver, CO), wrestled in the 63 kg. class last week in the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in Macon, France. It is a safe bet that a good portion of the folks reading this column already know who she is, but just in case you don’t, she is the much beloved athletic trainer for Whitley County Schools. Actually, Bryant’s official job title is "Training Room Coordinator." In addition to those duties, she also teaches physical education and health at Whitley. Kentucky’s 2016-17 deer season kicks off the first Saturday in September with the start of the 136-day archery season. Anticipation has been building for months. “Everything right now points toward another good season,” said Gabe Jenkins, deer program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Marx HVAC/The Heat, sponsored by Mark Napier of Corbin, has won the Corbin league eight times since 2005, earning a record of 101 wins to just nine loses. University of the Cumberlands is pleased to announce Chris Kraftick as the school's new Athletic Director (AD). In this position, Kraftick is responsible for directing Cumberlands's 26 athletic teams, 20 head coaches and more than 700 student-athletes. "Chris is an outstanding leader who has already made significant contributions to this university," said Dr. Larry Cockrum, President of University of the Cumberlands. Last year, the annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout was plagued by bad weather. Tournament manager Jimmy Hendrickson and his crew were able to get all of the games in and crown a champion, but lightning and frequent heavy downpours put things in doubt on a couple of occasions. Thankfully, this year’s Shootout tournament was contested under bright and sunny conditions. The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Golf team would battle the elements all week as they competed in the 2016 NAIA National Championship Tournament at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Georgia. UC would hold a share of the lead after the opening round of play before the 2nd round was cancelled. The Patriots would then play the 3rd and final round of play over a two-day span as the 4th round was cancelled due to weather as well. Last year, a story appeared in the News Journal about Nathan Smith, a local teacher who decided to compete in bodybuilding despite the fact that a medical condition forced him to begin living with a pacemaker in 2010. Smith recently placed second in the Classic Physique category at the 2016 Kentucky Derby Bodybuilding Championships in Louisville. That has qualified him to appear at the USA Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas in July. Should Smith place in the top two at the USA Championships, he will become an International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) professional competitor, which is the highest level that a bodybuilder can compete at.
