Local runners looking for a unique challenge need search no further than Corbin this weekend. Kyle Rogers, a local Information Technology professional and organizer of the Salt Lick Six 10k race, said he wanted something different when he conceived the race and began planning it earlier this year. The race will be happening this Saturday morning. “It’s something sort of new,” Rogers said. “I can’t think of the last 10k race that was held in this area. There aren’t many. Former Georgetown runner, Tennessee stay-at-home mom take top spots in 2017 Lion’s Chase Saturday

A former distance runner for Georgetown College and a stay-at-home mom from the heart of Tennessee outpaced all other challengers to win the The Lion’s Chase Saturday — the nation’s toughest obstacle course 5k race. Thirty-four-year-old Ben Hall of Louisville posted an impressive finishing time of 32:57. The race is run on a farm halfway between Williamsburg and Corbin in rural Whitley County. It includes drastic elevation changes, and about 50 obstacles. Hall has run the race numerous times before, and won it in 2013. CHS cheerleaders hopeful for another championship run

The senior members of this year’s Corbin High School cheer squad have the opportunity to do something very special before they graduate in the spring of 2018. That’s not to say that they haven’t accomplished plenty already, but should they secure a state championship title in December they will get to go out having won that title each year of their high school careers. WHS adding volleyball, renaming football field to honor former groundskeeper

Thanks to action by the Williamsburg Independent Board of Education last Thursday night, high school girls will have a new sport to play this fall and a former head groundskeeper is being honored with the football field being partially renamed in his honor. During a special meeting Thursday, the board voted to accept a proposal to add girl’s volleyball as a new sport starting this fall. Athletic Director John Harris told the board that perspective players began practicing after Christmas last year, and he is planning for about 20 total participants, including both the varsity and junior varsity programs. Cauz-N-Ruckus reclaims Rebels Shootout championship in 2017

In 2015, Cauz-N-Ruckus battled their way to a 42nd Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout championship. In 2016, many of the Ruckus players returned to Corbin’s Miller Park as members of the team Mar-Kel, going undefeated to secure the tournament’s 43rd championship crown. Now Ruckus is once again finding themselves back on top of the men’s softball mountain after taking home the championship trophy of the 44th Annual Rebels Shootout this past weekend. The following nine individuals, and one team, will be inducted this September as the inaugural class of the Whitley County Athletic Hall of Fame... 1985 Girls Basketball State Championship Team The 85 Lady Colonels reached the pinnacle of basketball, shocking the Commonwealth with a 4 game run in the Sweet Sixteen at Western Kentucky’s Diddle Arena, defeating Louisville Atherton in the Title Game. The 85 edition of the Lady Colonels won a school record 30 games while losing only twice. Rodger Bird selected for Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame

On June 1, 2017 Corbin’s own Rodger Bird will join the likes of Muhammad Ali, Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Johnny Unitas and Secretariat when he becomes one of the newest members of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. Bird, who graduated from Corbin High School in 1962, was twice named to the All-State list as a Redhound football player. In 1960 he helped lead the team to an undefeated season. He later went on to play college ball at the University of Kentucky, where he was a first team All-American for the Wildcats, and has since received SEC Legend honors. Three Corbin archers sign with UPike Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, the Corbin High School archery team celebrated as, for the first time ever, Redhound archers signed on to compete at the collegiate level. The day was made especially memorable because a total of three CHS archers signed, all of them inking with the University of Pikeville. “Today is a first,” said Corbin Athletic Director Andrew Roark at the signing ceremony. “These are the first student-athletes that we’ve had to sign scholarships in the sport of archery. Corbin cheer achieves fourth place finish at national championships

This past weekend, the region and state champion Corbin cheer squad returned to Orlando, FL to once again compete in the Universal Cheer Association’s National High School Cheerleading Championships. As the defending champions in the Medium Varsity II division, the cheer Hounds had high hopes for what they might accomplish this year at nationals. After two strong performances on Saturday and Sunday, the moment everyone was waiting for finally came.
