2016 Volleyball Preview: Whitley County Lady Colonels

The Whitley County Lady Colonels will be coming into the 2016 season looking to successfully defend their district championship crown, but the main goal will be to get back to competing for a 13th Region title after two years of getting knocked out in the first round of the region tournament. Whitley could have their best roster of players since that 2013 team that made it to state, but only time will tell if they will be able to match that achievement. In a recent interview, Head Coach David Halcomb talked about this year’s squad, saying, “I feel like we have a really athletic team. They do pass the look...

2016 Volleyball Preview: Lynn Camp Lady Cats

Lynn Camp volleyball missed out on the 13th Region tournament last season, but second-year Head Coach Lauren McMillan is hoping to build the program back into a top contender beginning with her young group of Lady Cats in 2016. The Lady Cats may be young this fall, with several middle schoolers making an appearance on the varsity roster, but they do have the benefit of increased participation compared to Coach McMillan’s first year at the helm. “For us to have 14 players on our roster is mind blowing,” McMillan said recently. “We have a completely new team this year, so we are having to go back and teach all of the...

2016 Volleyball Preview: Corbin Lady Hounds

Bryan Johnson is about to enter into his first season as head coach of the Corbin Lady Hounds volleyball team, and he is bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sport. Johnson began coaching at South Laurel High School when his daughter, Fawn Greer, started playing as a Lady Cardinal in the program’s inaugural season. Years later, he assisted Greer after she returned to coach the team herself. Johnson has also coached at Lynn Camp High School, helping the Lady Cats to back-to-back district championships in the early 2000’s. Most recently, he has led the Somerset Christian volleyball program to new heights, winning a Kentucky Christian Athletic...

2016 Soccer Preview: Whitley County Lady Colonels

The Whitley County Lady Colonels’ 2015 soccer season ended in heartbreaking fashion last October when they fell to Oneida Baptist Institute 1-0 in an overtime penalty kick shootout in the first round of the 49th District tournament. It was a huge disappointment for Head Coach Kelly Sawyers and company that the team would not get to advance, but it was also encouraging to see the Lady Colonels putting up such a fight in what would be their season finale. “The girls haven’t forgotten about that game,” said Sawyers. “They want to win against OBI, and I was just so proud of them for the way they played against them last year....

2016 Soccer Preview: Whitley County Colonels

The Whitley County Colonels finished the 2015 season with just one win on their record. It was a disappointing and frustrating campaign, but this fall Head Coach Jarred Earnest feels that his team will be able to turn things around thanks to a combination of athletic ability and a collective desire to get the job done on the field. “We have a pretty decent turnout this year,” Earnest said of the 2016 Colonels. “We have several returning players, as well as a lot of younger players who have come up from middle school. I’ve seen a lot of improvement in the team. We have several things to do before the...

Selena Mattingly preparing to defend Class A state title

Williamsburg Lady Jacket Selena Mattingly has already established herself as one of the top high school runners in the entire state of Kentucky, winning a Class A cross country title and two state track titles as a freshman last school year. Now, as a sophomore, Mattingly is preparing to defend her championships against a competitive field of athletes. She will begin that quest later this month when the 2016 cross country season gets underway. When asked to reflect back on all of the excitement of her freshman year, Mattingly said that she didn’t fully realize just how important her many accomplishments were as they were happening. After having some time...

Coach Dana White, Corbin Lady Hounds host softball skills camp

This past Friday and Saturday Lady Hounds softball Head Coach Dana White hosted her inaugural skills camp at Corbin High School. About 20 girls showed up for the camp, which was not quite the turnout that White was hoping for, but still, she said that she feels like the camp was an overall success. “There were not as many girls as I hoped there would be, but it worked out because they ended up getting more one-on-one instruction,” White explained. “I think they really benefited from having more of that kind of interaction.” Assisting White with the camp was two of her former high school teammates – Kayleigh Walts and Taylor...

Angel Cats, Alley Cats take home championships from Lynn Camp summer youth softball league

The championship for the player fast pitch division of Lynn Camp’s summer softball league closed out the season on Friday, July 29. The Mystery Cats and the Alley Cats faced off for the title with the Alley Cats coming away victorious, 17-13. The Alley Cats took a big lead, 12-1, by the bottom of the second inning, but then the Mystery Cats began to fight back. The game began with Alley Cat Madison Roberts getting a base hit on the first pitch, which lead to the first run. Roberts also pitched a complete game for the Alley Cats. Hailee Mills scored the first run for the Mystery Cats, also pitching six and...

2016 soccer preview: Corbin Lady Hounds

History was made in 2015 when the Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team finally made it over the hump, defeating South Laurel to secure a 49th District championship, then downing the Lady Cardinals once more a week later to become champions of the 13th Region. Those accomplishments were enough to make last season extra special for all involved, but throw in the Lady Hounds’ thrilling overtime victory against Estill County in the first round of the KHSAA state championship tournament, and you truly have a situation where the bar has been raised for all future CHS soccer teams. When asked recently how long it took for all of the success of last...

2016 soccer preview: Corbin Redhounds

Last season ended in disappointment for the Corbin Redhounds boys soccer team. After winning 13th Region titles the previous three years, the Hounds failed to make it out of district play in 2015, falling to South Laurel in a shocking first round loss in the 49th District tournament. “Last year was disappointing, but it wasn’t disappointing because of the fact that we didn’t repeat,” said Head Coach Armando Cima of the loss. “It was disappointing because we walked off the field for the last time after not playing our best game. That’s what you always want, and that’s what I always try to speak to the kids about a lot....
