Corbin, Whitley soccer teams preparing for district tournaments next week

The field is set for this year’s 49th District soccer tournaments, scheduled to take place next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at South and North Laurel High Schools in London. The Corbin Redhounds fell 1-0 to Pulaski County Monday evening, giving them an overall record of 7-8 heading into next week’s district tourney, where they will be facing the North Laurel Jaguars in the semifinal round. The Jags bested the Hounds 3-2 back on September 6, but if Corbin can come out on top this time they will punch their tickets to the 2016 13th Region tournament, and they will also earn the opportunity to play Whitley County, Oneida Baptist Institute or...

Canineu brothers adapting to college soccer, doing well at St. Francis Univ.

For years, Tulio and Lucas Canineu were integral parts of the Corbin boys soccer program. During their time at CHS the brothers helped the Redhounds compile an overall record of 58 wins, 34 losses and six ties. When they were playing together during the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons Corbin won three straight 13th Region championships. They were also 49th District champions in 2013 and 2014. The Canineus were both prolific scorers for the Hounds. They could take over a game in a moment’s notice, and they could just as effectively orchestrate situations where other teammates would be given opportunities to score goals as well. Whenever the ball touched their...

Senior Spotlight: 2016 Corbin girls soccer

The Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team only has a few more games remaining on their regular season schedule. From there, they will begin their quest to successfully defend their 49th District and 13th Region championship crowns. Leading that effort this fall are two seniors – Kara Grisell and Mallory Allen. Both 17-years-old, Allen plays forward and Grisell plays at right wing. They are both lifelong participants in the sport, and are looking to cap off their high school careers by bringing a few more championship titles home to Corbin. “It’s been really great,” Allen said of her time playing as a Lady Hound. “The team has really come together this year,...

Lady Colonels get their ninth win of the season, defeat Knox Central 9-1 Monday

The Whitley County girls soccer team has seen much improvement in 2016. Despite being a young group with no seniors on the roster, they have displayed a good amount of confidence and skill on the pitch. On Monday, the Lady Colonels picked up their ninth win of the season, dominating the visiting Knox Central Lady Panthers 9-1. “I think their passing and trapping is looking a lot stronger,” said Head Coach Kelly Sawyers when asked after the game to talk about the state of her team. “We’re making good runs to get to open areas of the field as well.” “The only thing we need to continue to work on is finishing,”...

Senior Spotlight: 2016 Corbin boys soccer

The Corbin boys soccer team came into Tuesday’s game at North Laurel looking to pick up their second win over a district opponent this year after defeating Whitley County 2-0 back on August 29. The Redhounds are being led by two seniors in 2016 – Ben Childers and John Lowe. Before Corbin took the field for a home contest against Southwestern Pulaski last week, these two players took a few moments to share their thoughts for this edition of Senior Spotlight. Childers, an 18-year-old center midfielder, has been playing soccer nearly his entire life. He said that it has always been fun to him, and getting to compete for a successful...

Corbin downs Whitley County 2-0 in boys soccer action

A Lawrence Lewis goal two minutes into the game followed by a Whitley County own goal about twenty minutes later was enough to give Corbin a 2-0 victory over 49th District rival Whitley County Monday, but the Redhounds had several opportunities to make that final score much more lopsided. Some shots on goal simply missed their mark for Corbin Monday, but many shots were kept out of the net thanks to solid play from Colonel goal keeper Jarred Havens. Regardless, Redhounds Head Coach Armando Cima was not pleased with his team’s overall performance, saying they need to improve in several areas moving forward this season. Despite the loss, Whitley County Head...

Whitley soccer teams fall to district opponents Thursday

It was not a good night for either of the Whitley County soccer programs, as both the boys and girls teams lost to 49th District opponents Thursday at the WCHS soccer complex. The boys team was coming off of an 8-1 victory over Middlesboro on Tuesday, and they were hoping to keep that positive momentum rolling with what would have been a huge win over district rival North Laurel Thursday night. It was not to be, however, as the Jaguars took a 3-0 lead with them into halftime, and then scored six goals in the final 40 minutes to take the 9-0 victory. “We were pumped up coming off of the...

Senior Spotlight: 2016 Whitley County Boys Soccer

This year’s Whitley County boys soccer team opened up their season last week with an 8-0 loss to defending 13th Region champs South Laurel. It wasn’t the start the Colonels wanted, but they still looked to be much improved compared to where they were at this point in 2015. Whitley is being led this season by four seniors, who we are about to meet in the first Senior Spotlight of the 2016-17 school year. Robbie Perry, a 17-year-old defender, has been playing soccer for seven years. When asked about being a senior Colonel this season, he said, “It feels awesome.” As for how he thinks things will go for the team this...

Lady Colonels soccer off to 2-0 start after Monday’s win over Casey County

The Whitley County Lady Colonels soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season Monday with a 3-1 win over visiting Casey County. Their first win came a week ago Tuesday, when they defeated Wayne County at home 5-0. “We’re really excited to be undefeated at this point in the season,” said Head Coach Kelly Sawyers. “Even though it was 5-0 against Wayne County, I feel like we played a better game against Casey. The speed of the game was much faster today than it was before.” Freshman Madison Broyles scored the first goal of the evening Monday, putting the Colonels up 1-0 when she found the back of the net with...

2016 Soccer Preview: Whitley County Lady Colonels

The Whitley County Lady Colonels’ 2015 soccer season ended in heartbreaking fashion last October when they fell to Oneida Baptist Institute 1-0 in an overtime penalty kick shootout in the first round of the 49th District tournament. It was a huge disappointment for Head Coach Kelly Sawyers and company that the team would not get to advance, but it was also encouraging to see the Lady Colonels putting up such a fight in what would be their season finale. “The girls haven’t forgotten about that game,” said Sawyers. “They want to win against OBI, and I was just so proud of them for the way they played against them last year....
