2016 Soccer Preview: Whitley County Colonels

The Whitley County Colonels finished the 2015 season with just one win on their record. It was a disappointing and frustrating campaign, but this fall Head Coach Jarred Earnest feels that his team will be able to turn things around thanks to a combination of athletic ability and a collective desire to get the job done on the field. “We have a pretty decent turnout this year,” Earnest said of the 2016 Colonels. “We have several returning players, as well as a lot of younger players who have come up from middle school. I’ve seen a lot of improvement in the team. We have several things to do before the...

2016 soccer preview: Corbin Lady Hounds

History was made in 2015 when the Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team finally made it over the hump, defeating South Laurel to secure a 49th District championship, then downing the Lady Cardinals once more a week later to become champions of the 13th Region. Those accomplishments were enough to make last season extra special for all involved, but throw in the Lady Hounds’ thrilling overtime victory against Estill County in the first round of the KHSAA state championship tournament, and you truly have a situation where the bar has been raised for all future CHS soccer teams. When asked recently how long it took for all of the success of last...

2016 soccer preview: Corbin Redhounds

Last season ended in disappointment for the Corbin Redhounds boys soccer team. After winning 13th Region titles the previous three years, the Hounds failed to make it out of district play in 2015, falling to South Laurel in a shocking first round loss in the 49th District tournament. “Last year was disappointing, but it wasn’t disappointing because of the fact that we didn’t repeat,” said Head Coach Armando Cima of the loss. “It was disappointing because we walked off the field for the last time after not playing our best game. That’s what you always want, and that’s what I always try to speak to the kids about a lot....

Column: Pro soccer action is closer than you might think

This From the Sidelines column appeared in the July 27 edition of the News Journal... This past weekend I had an awesome experience at the University of Cincinnati when my wife and I went to see Ohio’s newest pro soccer team – FC Cincinnati. In their inaugural season, FCC has already made quite an impact in the United Soccer League (USL). They currently sit near the top of the Eastern Conference standings, and on Saturday they defeated Louisville City 2-0 to become the recipients of the first-ever “River Cities Cup,” which will become an annual competition between these two rival clubs. Louisville came out on top of their first meeting with Cincy,...

Former Lady Hound soccer player gets to hone her skills in Brazil next month

Pele. Ronaldo. Neymar. Kaka. All of these names have two things in common. First, they are some of the greatest soccer players the world has ever seen. Second, they are all from Brazil. To have the opportunity to compete where these, and so many other phenomenal athletes call home would be an honor for any soccer player. To visit a country with such a rich history in the sport would truly be a dream come true, and that is exactly what one former Corbin Lady Hound will get the opportunity to do later this summer. Kaitlyn Waddle, who is about to enter into her sophomore season with the Lincoln Memorial...

Lucas Canineu reuniting with brother, father to play college soccer

To say that the Canineu brothers – Lucas and Tulio – have played important roles as members of the Corbin High School boys soccer program over the last several seasons would actually be a pretty big understatement. In fact, without them it is difficult to imagine that the Redhounds could have enjoyed as much success as they have recently, winning 13th Region titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014. This dynamic duo gave opponents fits during those three history-making seasons before Tulio left along with several other teammates in the class of 2015. After his older brother’s graduation, Lucas took on even more of a leadership role last fall. He shined as...

CHS Lady Hounds selected to represent United States in international soccer competitions

The Corbin Lady Hounds soccer team made history in 2015. They won 50th District and 13th Region titles, advancing all the way to the quarterfinal round of the KHSAA state championship playoffs before being defeated by eventual state runner-up Lexington Catholic. Two young players, sophomores Nikki Wells and Abby Baker, have played integral roles in the team’s recent success.  Both girls earned special recognition for their play at the district, region and state levels, and now they are both being presented with the opportunity to represent their country as members of U16 national teams. Wells will be traveling to Madrid this summer, along with other players from across the country, to compete...

Lady Colonel Allison Jones signs with LWC soccer

On Monday, Whitley County Lady Colonel soccer player Allison Jones signed her letter of intent to play for the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders beginning next season. When asked about the opportunity, Jones said, “Since the beginning of the school year Lindsey Wilson has been my top choice. I want to play on their soccer team, and I really like the school as well. I love the campus.” When asked to reflect back on her time at Whitley, Jones said, “I will definitely miss the team, and all of the special times that we’ve had together. I have really grown and learned a lot while playing soccer here.” LWC women’s soccer assistant...

Celebrating 23 years of CHS Soccer

The Corbin High School soccer program is celebrating its 23-year anniversary in 2015. The soccer Hounds played a JV-only scheduled in their inaugural season during the fall of 1992, and they were co-ed until splitting into separate boys and girls teams in the mid-nineties. Several district and region titles later, Head Coach Armando Cima recalls what it was like when things were just getting started over two decades ago. The story begins with the 1992-93 school year. Coach Cima, who still coaches the CHS boys soccer team today, agreed to lead the first-ever Redhounds soccer squad at the request of several parents of local players. “I really didn’t start the...

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp returns to Whitley County

Earlier this spring an announcement appeared inside a print edition of The News Journal about Challenger Sports’ British Soccer Camp, which returned to Whitley County for the second year just this past week. The camp included instruction for children as young as 2-3 years of age, and progressed all the way up to high school aged players. Conducting this year’s camp was Anthony Goss, who has traveled to the United States all the way from England to help teach kids about the world’s most popular sport – soccer. “I’ve been coaching soccer for nine years in England, and this is my first year in America,” said Goss when asked about...
