Corbin High School celebrates opening of new athletic commons area Monday

Earlier this week, the brand new athletic commons area at Corbin High School was officially unveiled to the community. For many current Redhounds and Lady Hounds, it was a chance to check out the facility that they will call home for the duration of their high school athletic careers. “It’s going to be great,” said tennis Coach Chris Jones. “The courts have been resurfaced, there are separate locker rooms for the boys and the girls, they have added bleachers, and then, of course, there is the tower.” The tower that Jones is referring to is a large structure located at the center of the commons area that provides coaches and officials...

CHS student-athlete selected to serve on KHSAA Student Advisory Council

Being a student-athlete can potentially open doors to new and exciting opportunities for growth and development. Case in point, the Kentucky High School Athletics Association’s (KHSAA) Student Advisory Council. This group is comprised each year of promising young men and women from across the state, and in 2024-25 it includes Corbin High School’s own Haley Carr. “The school has to nominate you, then there is an application process and a Zoom interview,” explained Carr, who is a tennis player soon-to-be beginning her senior year at CHS. Carr said that her appointment to the KHSAA Student Advisory Council will last for a year, and that she got to meet her fellow council...

Corbin student-athletes promote mental health awareness with award-winning original PSA

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, three Corbin High School students are receiving some much-deserved recognition after putting together an award-winning public service announcement about mental health as part of global HOSA - Future Health Professionals organization. “HOSA began as ‘Health Occupation Students of America,’” explained Julia Rollins, health science teacher at the Corbin Area Technology Center. “About eight years ago it went international as a student-led organization, not a club.” This year, three of Rollins’ students - Riley Lewis, Lindsay Jones and Hannah Perry - came together to create a 30-second PSA on the important topic of mental health. The project has been well-received, and was selected as...

Allison Lundy and Abby Lunsford are doubles partners who are looking to finish their high school careers on a high note, and help add yet another trophy to the case for the Lady Hounds. “Tennis is more mental than it is physical, in my opinion,” Lundy said. “It can be easy to beat yourself up when you make a mistake, which is why I like competing in doubles more. When...
