In this week’s Senior Spotlight we meet the senior members of the 2016 Whitley County High School track and field team. When the season kicked off a few weeks ago, each of these athletes took the time to talk about their expectations for this spring.
Tyler Lawson (4x400 m relay, 4x800 m relay, 800 m run, distance medley, steeplechase) said, “I’m hoping that we can make it back to state as a 4x400 and 4x800 team. Hopefully we can just do better this year than everybody expects us to.”

The Williamsburg High School track and field team is coming off of another impressive performance this past Saturday at Pulaski Southwestern’s Warrior Invitational. They were back in Somerset Tuesday night at Pulaski Co High School’s all-comers meet, and they are scheduled to attend another all-comers meet at Knox Central High School in Barbourville this Friday, March 25.
The track and field Yellow Jackets kicked off the spring season by hosting the 2016 Frost Bite Relays at the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, March 12. Prior to the start of that meet, this year’s senior athletes took a few moments to give their comments for this week’s Senior Spotlight.

Allen Harris just finished his first season as head coach of the Lynn Camp High School football program last fall. This spring, he is taking on another title as the new head coach of the school’s track and field program.
“We’re looking to compete,” Harris said recently. “We’ve been practicing for about a month now, working out indoors when the weather is bad. We’re looking forward to the season getting started.”

A new track and field season will begin this Saturday, March 12, at the Frost Bite Relays in Williamsburg. In 2015, all three programs in Whitley County sent athletes to the University of Kentucky to compete at the KHSAA state championship meet. This year, Corbin Head Coach Tyler Harris, Williamsburg Head Coach John Harris and Whitley County Head Coach David Lennon are all hoping to get their teams back to Lexington. The 2015 KHSAA state cross country championships took place this past Saturday, November 7, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Coverage area runners participated in five of the day’s six races, and one runner was able to come away with a state championship title.
Williamsburg freshman Selena Mattingly won the girls’ Class A race with a time of 18:52.87. The day after winning her state title she took the time to answer a few questions about the experience, as well as what the future holds for her in the months and years ahead.
