How are things in your world? This was a common question I would ask folks in the newsroom at WYMT. It became one of my catchphrases. As I walked around checking in with the staff each day, I would often ask, ‘How are things in your world?’
The question was often met with one of two answers – a thumbs up or, ‘it’s still spinning.’
Another one of my catchphrases became ‘cool beans.’ I don’t know where I picked it up, but once I started saying it, I never stopped. At the end of news meetings, I would often say ‘cool beans’ to which staff would respond, ‘the beans are cool.’
On my last day, several members of the newsroom gave me cards – many of which included one of those two phrases. I never really thought about how much I said them until people started mentioning that they would miss hearing those phrases.
The name of my column is a tribute to my Mountain Family. It’s my way of asking them each week, ‘How are things in your world?’ I know it may seem sentimental, and it is. If you know me personally, you know I am sentimental about a lot of things. My Mountain Family just happens to be one of them.
For the next short while, you will likely hear a lot about my time in broadcast. While I am excited to be back in print journalism, I made a lot of memories working for the television station. I look forward to sharing some of those memories with you here!
On a not so personal note, the News Journal has a new website.
We hope that you are enjoying the now much more user-friendly version of the website. The idea and development of the site began while Trevor Sherman was still publisher. As I came on board, much of the hard work was already complete. One of the key folks involved in the process was Zabu Kiogora. He works with Forcht Group in Lexington. We are so appreciative of the hard work he has put into ensuring you all have the best possible user experience.
We appreciate your patience as we continue working to complete the migration from our old site.
