Corbin’s own Frank Selvy, one of the greatest Redhound athletes in history, passed away Tuesday at the age of 91.
Selvy played varsity basketball for Corbin from 1948-1950 before going on to play collegiately at Furman University in South Carolina. It was during his time at Furman that he scored an NCAA Division-I record 100 points in a game against Newberry. He accomplished the feat as a senior on Feb. 13, 1954.
Selvy was named conference player of the year in the 1952-53 and 1953-54 seasons, and he was a three-time All-American selection. He was the number one overall draft pick in the 1954 NBA draft, being selected by the Baltimore Bullets.
Selvy played nine years in the NBA with a total of five different franchises, finishing out his professional playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Selvy returned to Furman after his playing days were over, coaching the Paladins for four seasons. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two children, Valerie and Mike; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
