Thanks to the efforts of students at Corbin Elementary School, less fortunate families will be getting 3,764 cans of food this holiday season.
The canned food drive was part of a competition where the class bringing in the most cans of food got a pizza party.
Angela Kilburn’s fifth graders were the winning class, which got the pizza party. Katie Ernest’s fifth graders brought in the second most cans of food and Shawn Siler’s fifth graders brought in the third most cans of food.
Student teachers Kala Jones and Niki Nantz helped spearhead the effort as a leadership project that was done in conjunction with the family resource center and the student leadership team.
“They (students) just really took it 
seriously and did a great job,” Jones said. “Students on the student leadership team, they helped collect the food each day and bring us the numbers,” Jones noted.
Nantz said this was the first time the food drive has been held since the pandemic.
School officials then put together 52 food boxes with the donations that were distributed to families of students in the district.
“It’s exciting. I feel like this year people probably need it. I am glad that the boxes are really full and that we really get to help our community,” Jones added. “I am proud of our students. They took it seriously and did a great job.”
The remainder of the food items are being donated to Restoration Ministries and First Baptist Church in Corbin, which both operate food pantries.
