Corbin man dies in commercial vehicle crash near London

Date:

A Corbin man was killed Wednesday when the cargo van he was driving side swiped a dump truck and then hit a coal truck head-on on West Ky. 80 in Laurel County.

According to Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Public Affairs Officer Steven Douglas, Donald Perry, 49, of Corbin, was pronounced dead at the scene about 8 miles west of London.

Witnesses told police that Perry was passing traffic in a no-passing zone.

As a result of the head-on collision, Douglas said the coal truck, which was carrying a load of coal, overturned and caught fire, igniting a small brush fire nearby.

The driver of the dump truck, David Adkins, 38, of London, was taken to St. Joseph–London Hospital. The driver of the coal truck, Buck Massey III, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Douglas said neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected as factors in the wreck

Vehicle enforcement officers were assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police, Laurel County Rescue Squad, Swiss Colony Fire Department and the Laurel County Division of Public Safety.

Officer Greg Reams is continuing the investigation.
